Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. Blame for these tragedies must be assigned where it belongs: In the first instance to the criminal Israeli apartheid regime and its US backers, together with the whole reactionary Zionist project of establishing an exclusivist Jewish state by expelling Palestinians and confining them to a constantly shrinking set of open-air prisons and ghettos. Halting the escalation of the bloodshed being planned by the Israeli government, backed by the NATO imperialist powers, requires mobilizing opposition in the international working class. The Turkish ruling elite has reacted to the indiscriminate attacks of the Israeli state on civilians by calling for "restraint" and compliance with international law. The Labour Party conference is being staged with one central goal: to profile the party's readiness for government based on a programme of militarism and class war. Support for Israel's ongoing bloodbath serves as the touchstone for these efforts. Germany's ruling class, responsible for the worst crimes in human history, is once again wading in blood. It enthusiastically supports the genocidal actions of the far-right Netanyahu regime and the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip. The attacks on the demonstrations are without recent precedent, and carry with them the unmistakable whiff of a police state. Workers at the Big Three auto plants responded with enthusiasm to the news that 3,900 Mack Trucks workers had gone on strike after rejecting a UAW-backed contract by a three-to-one margin. Four thousand Mack Trucks workers launched a strike in multiple states Monday at 7 a.m. after overwhelmingly voting to reject a tentative agreement backed by the United Auto Workers and UAW President Shawn Fain over the weekend. The decisive role of the Mack Workers Rank-and-File Committee in leading the opposition to the UAW's pro-company deal was acknowledged by the industry website FreightWaves Monday. Temporary workers at Stellantis and GM are facing layoff or sharp reduction of hours with the evident aim of creating hardship and divisions within the workforce. Members of Congress in the United States are discussing a bill funding the Ukraine war to the tune of up to $100 billion in a single shot, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. Kennedy made it clear that he would seek to funnel popular hostility to both corporate parties in a right-wing direction. The official Yes23 campaign reportedly has a $50 million budget, overwhelmingly derived from the country's largest corporations. Speakers presented a socialist program to unite the working class against war, austerity, and the racial divisions being whipped up by all the established parties ahead of the October 14 election. The struggle of the subway, rail, water and sanitation workers in São Paulo, as well as that of the students at USP and UNICAMP, is against not only extreme right-wing Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, but also the unions that are isolating these struggles. President Wickremesinghe's regime is being ordered to escalate its attacks on the working class and poor, which means even more brutal increases in taxes and the cost of essentials and basic services. There is a recognition that the period in which the escalation of US government debt could be endlessly financed because interest rates were at historic lows has come to an end. Why should workers be given less than a day to study a contract that determines the next four years of their lives? On principle, Hormel workers should reject this contract, in light of the apparent attempt by the UFCW to rush them into accepting this deal. The latest round of evaluations demonstrates that the system's wage cuts were not the result of a "glitch" in the new RRECS system. The fact that the coronavirus can directly damage the arteries of the heart and induce the formation of so-called "plaques" is a surprise, but not entirely without precedent. Nonunion dockworkers blocked entrances to Mexico's Lazaro Cardenas Port while dockers across Chile staged a 72-hour strike and 700 pharmaceutical workers in Illinois have ratified a contract. "What's the point of paying your union dues if they're going to do nothing? If the workers got together to fight this, I'd be supportive of that." The impact of passing the Illegal Immigration Act in July will make conditions for asylum seekers unbearable. Each year, over 27,000 refugees who cross the channel will be denied status in the UK.
