The Labor government's full-throated support of imperialist militarism, in Israel, Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific, is incompatible with the defence of a persecuted anti-war publisher. One of the key features of the present situation is the increasing domination of the global economy by giant corporations and finance capital which has led to the reduction of the labour share of income from 57 percent in 2000 to 53 percent today. Judicial workers held marches and rallies in key Mexican cities over state imposed cuts while government workers in Argentina struck for 72 hours over pay. The Sri Lankan government has assured the IMF that it will deepen the assault on working people, further increasing taxation, privatisations and subsidy-slashing measures. The 92nd Street Y, a prominent sponsor of author talks, postponed an appearance by prize-winning Viet Thanh Nguyen because he signed a statement, "An Open Letter on the Situation in Palestine," published in the London Review of Books on October 16. Some 360 engineers, operators, maintenance workers, supervisors, and administrative staff walked off the job early Sunday morning, shutting down the St. Lawrence Seaway, which enables oceangoing vessels to travel between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean.
