 Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. On Tuesday, over 150 people attended a lecture by David North, national chairman of the Socialist Equality Party in the United States, at the University of Michigan. The meeting, called to mark the centenary of the founding of the Left Opposition by Leon Trotsky in 1923, also addressed the imperialist wars in Gaza and Ukraine. A full report of the meeting will be published later today. The UAW leadership is clearly concerned that reports of huge profits by Ford and GM will fuel workers' resistance to anything less than a massive victory. The ability of the far-right Netanyahu government, which is deeply unpopular within Israel, to resort to such brutal methods of collective punishment is due above all to the unconditional support it enjoys from the imperialist powers, first and foremost the United States. Today's events are the product of the founding of Israel in 1948 through the forcible expulsion of Palestine's existing Arab population and of the three-quarters of a century of brutality and mass murder that followed. The press conference the French president held with Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu amounted to an open-ended call for French and NATO support for Israeli escalation. Despite attempts by the government, authorities and media to criminalise all protests against the genocide in Gaza and defame them as "anti-Semitic," numerous rallies and demonstrations continue to take place throughout Germany. The mealy-mouthed statement, signed by Unifor, the Canadian Union of Public Employees and others, is aimed at confining protests to futile appeals to the Liberal government—which is itself complicit in horrific Israeli war crimes—to press for a "ceasefire." The WSWS spoke with people who protested in Auckland, Nelson, Hamilton and Christchurch. They denounced the New Zealand government's support for Israel's bombing of Palestinians in Gaza under the fraudulent pretext of "self-defence." "Israel is a proxy state for the US. Their capitalist interests align with the genocide of Palestinians. It's an expansion of US imperialism." All disciplinary action against the victimised London Underground train driver should be dropped, whatever code of conduct is cited by TfL. This is a case of class injustice which needs to be overturned through collective struggle. Starmer's attempt to perfume the stench pouring off Labour will do nothing to convince millions of disgusted workers and youth, not only Muslims, to vote for the party at the next election. Jenna Ellis is the third lawyer and fourth defendant to plead guilty in relation to the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Milei represents a program of open civil war and fascist reaction against the working class, but another Peronist administration does not represent a "democratic" alternative. The ruling Workers Party's main concern throughout the investigation has been to cover up the Brazilian military's role in the coup. The Biden administration has seized on a collision between Philippine and Chinese vessels near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea to issue a military threat to China. Even as it threatens a broader war throughout the Middle East while backing Israel's genocidal destruction of Gaza, the US is making clear that there will be no let-up in the plans for war against China. An open letter, issued by a privileged layer of indigenous figures who led the Voice Yes campaign, further highlights the immense class chasm shown in the referendum's overwhelming defeat on October 14.
