Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden gave a speech completely associating his government with the barbarism of the Israeli state, giving the Netanyahu government a green light to carry out mass murder. The strike by 3,900 Mack Trucks workers in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida has dealt a powerful blow to the efforts of the United Auto Workers bureaucracy to contain the growing resistance of workers. The reason for the shutdown was Unifor's fear of a forge cross-border movement over the heads over the nationalist, pro-company Unifor and UAW bureaucracies. Nearly 4,000 UAW members who work at Mack Trucks in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida are now on strike, after we overwhelmingly rejected a contract supported by the UAW leadership at the local and national level. Non-union pharmacy employees stage a three-day walkout to protest unsafe working conditions that have only been exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. Little more than two weeks after they rose in unison to applaud a Nazi war criminal, the leaders of all the parties in Canada's parliament have joined together to endorse the Israeli state's "right" to wantonly slaughter Palestinians and denounce opposition to Israeli repression as "anti-Semitic." Thousands attended an emergency protest outside the Israeli embassy in London Monday evening to oppose Israel's offensive against Gaza. A high proportion of young people and families, many with links to Palestine or the wider Middle East, were among the crowd. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman are utilising Israel's war on Gaza and the Palestinians to launch the gravest attack on free speech and the right to protest in post-war British history. In both instances the unarmed 62-year-old grandfathers, one black, one white, were assaulted by police under no suspicion of having committed a crime. Starmer's speech was a declaration of authoritarianism, celebrating the party's mass frame-up and ruthless purge of left-wing members. It was a speech that would be welcomed by dictators everywhere. Far-right AfD overtakes parties of Germany's federal government in Bavaria and Hesse state elections The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is growing because the Social Democrats, Greens and Left Party have largely adopted its policies and paved the way for it. It is a complicated, dark, disturbing film about fascism, bourgeois corruption and counterrevolution. The film is currently streaming on Netflix. "The corporate support for the Voice should set up alarm bells for anyone who considered themselves on the left." Workers and students who spoke with the WSWS described worsening poverty, soaring living costs, and denounced the pro-imperialist positions of the Labour and National parties. The proposed deal, hailed as a "win" by the United Workers Union (UWU) bureaucracy, is scarcely better than the original offer: a 13.12 percent pay "rise" over three years. A study from the Annenberg Institute at Brown University reveals that teacher vacancies spiked 51 percent from 2022 to 2023. The independent Ford Action Committee has long warned that there is no red line the works council and IG Metall would not cross. The WSWS spoke with a Communication Workers Union rep who has been victimised by Royal Mail on trumped up charges relating to the year-long dispute. The walkout at GM Canada—the first strike Unifor has authorized during a Detroit Three bargaining round since 1996—places Canadian autoworkers in a powerful position to mount a joint struggle with their US brothers and sisters. But only if workers seize control of their struggle from the nationalist, pro-company Unifor apparatus.
