Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The nonstop media coverage of the North Atlantic episode is vastly different from the treatment devoted to last week's terrible tragedy off the Greek coast. The lengthy exposé has been met with virtual silence from the White House, congressional Democrats and the corporate media as a whole. Despite billions of dollars in weapons and training, Ukraine's vaunted counteroffensive continues to falter as tens of thousands of soldiers are sent to their deaths. The plea deal with federal prosecutors is both a cover-up of Hunter Biden's profiteering from the political connections of his father and fuel for false Republican and far-right claims of a legal double standard in comparison to the recent federal indictment of Donald Trump. An Occupational Safety and Hazard Association (OSHA) report stated that the airline did not provide "a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death of serious physical harm to employees that were exposed to ingestion and jet blast hazards." As nurses warned, Vaught's persecution has opened the door for increased attacks on health care workers made to pay for dangerous short staffing and conditions in hospitals driven by profit interests. With no public health measures in place, very low levels of vaccine-induced immunity, and a bubbling "variant soup," ordinary people now confront an unending cycle of infection and reinfection. Tellingly, the education unions' main activity in recent weeks was to jump on a report by the Sunday Times, which published the leaked latest recommendations of the STRB, proposing a 6.5 percent wage rise for teachers for the 2023-24 pay round. The government announced minimal reforms and an inquiry, fearful that the outcry against Ofsted will coalesce with and further ignite the current struggle of teachers over pay, workload and education funding. Over 100 members of the Communication Workers Union sought to wage a fight against imposed revisions and the suspension of their two union reps back in February. Socialist Alternative acknowledges that the Voice to parliament has not emerged from the demands of Aboriginal workers and youth and will do nothing to address their plight, but insists that the Labor government's policy must be supported. Driven by the effects of capitalist-induced climate change, wildfires are continuing to burn out of control across the country, from Quebec in the east to British Columbia in the west and the Yukon and Northwest Territories in the north.
