Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. If the courageous Vietnam-era whistleblower carried out his actions today, he would undoubtedly face the same fate as Julian Assange: imprisonment and media vilification. It has taken less than three months for UAW President Shawn Fain and his administration to demonstrate conclusively where they stand: on the side of the corporations and opposed to the interests of the workers they claim to represent. The explosion of the Kakhovka dam and the government's response has exposed the destructive and dangerous logic of the capitalist system. In the months after China's first wave of mass infections with COVID-19 last winter, the term "Long COVID" gradually entered public consciousness as many discovered that they are still troubled by prolonged symptoms months after "recovery." The coal royalty boost has only a marginal impact on the super-profits of the coal giants, while the cost-of-living measures do little to offset the devastating impact of surging prices and home mortgage repayments and rents. With the unions either overtly urging a "yes" vote or sending a clear message to workers that there was no way for them to fight even if they voted "no," the fact that only 63 percent of workers voted in favour of the agreement reflects substantial opposition to the deal. This column profiles important historical events which took place during this week, 25 years ago, 50 years ago, 75 years ago and 100 years ago. If the violence remains unabated after a month and a half, it is because both the BJP state government and India's national BJP government—led by the Hindu-supremacist Prime Minister Narendra Modi—are complicit.
