Dear subscriber, At an event in Sydney, Australia on May 25, World Socialist Web Site International Editorial Board Chairman David North launched his new book Leon Trotsky and the Struggle for Socialism in the Twenty-First Century. The paperback and ePub are available to pre-order now, and will ship on June 30. Leon Trotsky remains the towering figure in the history of revolutionary socialism in the twentieth century. A careful study of his writings is essential for the elaboration of the strategy and tactics of socialist revolution in our epoch, that of imperialist clashes coalescing into a new world war and a worldwide assault on the condition of the working class. Trotsky's greatest achievement was the founding of the Fourth International (FI) in 1938, after the Third International under Stalin facilitated the coming to power of Hitler in Germany, without a fight by the multi-millioned working class. A principled internationalist, opposed to Stalin's "socialism in one country," Trotsky wrote in the founding document of the FI that "the historical crisis of mankind is reduced to the crisis of the revolutionary leadership." David North has played a leading role in the international socialist movement for nearly 50 years and is presently the chairperson of the International Editorial Board of the World Socialist Web Site and the Socialist Equality Party (US). His many published works are available at Mehring.com. | | | David North was joined by Evan Blake in Sydney, Australia on May 25, to a hybrid in-person and streamed event announcing the publication of Leon Trotsky and the Struggle for Socialism in the Twenty-First Century as well as COVID, Capitalism and Class War. | | | | | | Written over a forty-year period, the essays in this forthcoming book are devoted to bringing the rich historical lessons to a new generation of workers and young people, in order to resolve the "historical crisis of mankind." The first piece in the volume, a series of essays titled Leon Trotsky and the Development of Marxism, was written in 1982. The last, a letter to young Trotskyists in Russia and the former Soviet Union, was published just months ago. | | | | Available now from Mehring.com | | | | At the May 25 event in Sydney, Evan Blake, a leading member of the Socialist Equality Party in the United States, introduced the volume he edited, COVID, Capitalism, and Class War: A Social and Political Chronology of the Pandemic.
