The open intervention of a government minister in the campaign to shut down an antiwar meeting organized by the International Youth and Students for Social Equality in Toronto marks a new stage in the efforts of ruling elites around the world to censor opponents of imperialist war. More Democrats than Republicans supported the Fiscal Responsibility Act, the deal worked out between the Biden White House and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The combination of sustained attacks inside of Russia, accelerated moves to accept Ukraine into the NATO alliance structure, and the massive deployment of US troops on Russia's border point to an extremely dangerous escalation of the war. The World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) is publishing a further round-up of comments received from UK postal workers condemning the Communication Workers Union sell-out deal with Royal Mail. The war crimes, by Ben Roberts-Smith and others, flowed directly from the character of the war as a neo-colonial occupation aimed at subjugating an entire population. Despite the union bureaucracies' efforts to strangle the struggles of millions of workers to throw out Macron, workers are determined to continue the fight. The New Zealand Reserve Bank's agenda of deliberately engineering a recession is escalating the cost-of-living crisis and initiating an onslaught on jobs. The Victorian government's regressive measures represent only a down payment for the sharper austerity cuts demanded by the ruling class. The 10.5 percent wage increase over 3 years is a disgrace for a workforce that lost more than 170 people while maintaining transit service throughout the pandemic. The union has declared the agreement a "historic win," however it provides no guaranteed staffing of counselors, paraeducators or nurses, and includes paltry wage increases that barely meet inflation. Amis was lauded in life and now in death because he was a man not simply of his time, but of a deeply reactionary upper-middle-class social milieu.
