Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The impoverished West African state of Niger is the latest flashpoint in the struggle by the imperialist powers for a redivision of the world. Even though Hawaii has the most sophisticated disaster alert system in the world, it was not activated as deadly wildfires swept through west Maui, driven by multiple impacts of global climate change. The number of suicides in 2022 reached nearly 50,000. Deaths among youth and young adults has risen more than 60 percent in the last two decades. The appointment gives US Attorney David Weiss expanded powers to potentially charge President Biden's son with corrupt business dealings and bring him to trial in the midst of the 2024 presidential election campaign. As it ramps up its commitment to a US-led war on China, the Labor government is adamant that any decision to go to war must be made entirely in secret, with no formal process required whatsoever. Taro Aso is the highest-ranking Japanese politician to visit Taiwan since 1972 when Tokyo broke off formal diplomatic relations with Taipei and recognized Beijing as the legitimate government of all China. While noting the danger of a conflict with China, Kevin Rudd is fully on board with the US-led war drive that is producing the dangers. While it is still unclear who was behind Villavicencio's killing, it is evident that its effect will be to discredit the elections as a whole, creating the potential for their being overturned. The changes will allow for an expansion of the army, which is largely drawn from the working class, without a general mobilization. The tentative agreement poses the need for a rank-and-file rebellion by workers against the union apparatus, not the reform of the bureaucracy from within by a non-existent "progressive" faction. The pseudo-left is deploying into two lines of defense against this. Yellow's $2 billion in assets will be a financial bonanza for Wall Street as 30,000 people are put out of work. The strike vote comes just two weeks after Lear announced record sales of $6 billion for the second quarter. If thousands of Royal Mail workers were blindsided by CWU General Secretary Dave Ward's betrayal of the strike, this was above all the responsibility of the Socialist Party, Socialist Workers Party and similar petty-bourgeois groups which built him up over years as a "left". The Graduate Employees Organization at the University of Michigan has conspired with American Federation of Teachers bureaucrats, ex-UAW officials and Democratic Party operatives to impose a sellout contract on striking graduate student instructors and officially end the walkout before the fall semester begins. Opposition to the deal among health workers is broader than that reflected in the 42 percent "no" vote. This result was engineered by the union leadership, which adopted a "neutral" stance, tacitly endorsing the offer. "One can only conclude that the university is seeking to silence the only socialist and anti-war club on campus, with a long record of activity and meetings. This anti-democratic act must be opposed." Skyrocketing temperatures hit Ukraine this past week as the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to push forward an obviously botched counteroffensive that has already claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers. Despite generating tens of billions in revenue annually, Tyson has been laying off workers around the country. If acted upon, the D.C. councilman's demand for military deployment would mark the third time in just over three years in which the federal government has deployed troops into Washington D.C. With the backing of Unifor and the social-democratic NDP, the Trudeau government is determined to make Canadian imperialism a major player in the emerging global EV industry. In contrast to the treacherous role of the USW bureaucracy, the National Steel Car Rank-and-File Committee (NSC-RFC), established by shop floor workers on the eve of the strike, blazed a new path for the rank-and-file. The committee has become a pole of opposition to the pro-corporate USW leadership. India: Punjab power utility workers demand job permanency; Bangladeshi tea garden workers still on strike; Australia: South32 labour hire coal miners strike for higher pay; New Zealand Westpac workers hold nationwide walkout.
