Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. According to European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde, "in this age of shifts and breaks … we do not yet know whether we are returning to the old world or entering a new one." The massive strike votes in the US and Canada give a sense of the explosive anger that has built up in the working class throughout the world. General Motors and the United Auto Workers kept lines running at Flint Assembly in the midst of a tornado warning last Thursday, jeopardizing the lives of workers. According to the police, the shooter, 21-year-old Ryan Christopher Palmeter, left behind multiple manifestos detailing his hatred of Black people. President Joe Biden and his wife Jill returned to Lake Tahoe after a six-hour visit to wildfire-ravaged Maui to finish his vacation at the lakefront mansion of billionaire Tom Steyer. IYSSE and SEP members campaigned at the campus prior to the event, explaining the growing threat of world war and the international socialist program required to prevent it. The Zelensky government's blatant attack on freedom of the press not only exposes, yet again, the lie that the imperialist war waged against Russia in Ukraine is about "democracy." It also underscores that nothing that is reported in the official media about what is happening in Ukraine can be taken at face value. The speech was followed by television appearances in which Sanders opposed any third-party challenge to Biden, saying this might help the likely Republican candidate, ex-president Trump. Only days after the International Brotherhood of Teamsters declared that a national agreement at UPS had been ratified in a vote clouded by suspicion, the union announced the passage of another deal affecting UPS workers in Chicago and the Midwest. With the school year beginning today, the Detroit Federation of Teachers announced the passage of a sellout contract that had the support of, at most, a quarter of the union membership. The unions are avoiding doing what is necessary: publicising the strike and mobilising support among the workforces of those companies affected by the strike, together with the working class as a whole. The report has already been used by sections of the political and media establishment to insist that governments cannot afford projected expenditure on aged pensions, healthcare and other social necessities. The stoppages are another indication of the willingness of university workers to fight back against the offensive on their jobs and conditions, and pro-corporate restructuring, which is intensifying under the Albanese Labor government. This column profiles important historical events which took place during this week, 25 years ago, 50 years ago, 75 years ago and 100 years ago. Without advance notice, Stihl laid off one-third of its Virginia Beach workforce August 23. The union's appeal to Governor Phil Murphy, a multimillionaire former financier, is a fresh warning to the 1,700 nurses that their weeks-long strike is in danger of being betrayed. Last week's particularly destructive chain of events was exacerbated by a combination of deteriorating social conditions, poorly lighted and constructed roads with little to no drainage, crumbling infrastructure, and, most importantly, the callous indifference of the establishment political parties and the corporate entities masquerading as "public utilities." The guideline revision is not an arbitrary decision or a misguided mistake, but a conscious and criminal maneuver designed to ensure that another surge or another pandemic will not cause any slowdowns in the economy. The fall in the unit cost of energy will be immediately offset due to the government ending its energy bill suppurt scheme and a rise in the daily standing charge.
