The fifth largest trucking firm in the United States shut its operations last Friday and laid off 30,000 drivers, yard workers and office staff across the US. The latest attack illustrates that, following the Vilnius NATO summit which significantly increased the alliance's preparations for global war, the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate. The urgent task British Columbia dockworkers now confront is to break out of the straitjacket imposed upon them by the ILWU leadership. The wide turnout, with more than 300 registered, was a sign of growing opposition to the contract, which contains substandard wage increases and freezes to pension contributions for workers throughout much of the US. In a conversation with labor relations "expert" Art Wheaton, Automotive News writers want to know if Shawn Fain can deliver on demands of auto companies. The joint statement placed the war drive in the Indo-Pacific in the context of American imperialism's global strategy of confrontation with both Russia and China. Official figures show the youth unemployment rate is 21.3 percent but in reality it could be more than double this level. Whatever government is formed, there is no golden road out of the crisis. A PSOE-government is not the answer to the far-right. To the extent that workers continue to accept the PSOE and Sumar as a lesser evil, this will only disarm them politically. That the radiographers and doctors are fighting alone in their disputes points to the terrible consequences of the union bureaucracy's sell-outs in the health sector finalised in May and June. Almost half of the membership voted to continue industrial action for a pay rise, but the Health Services Union is using the result to ram through real wage cuts.
