Albanese's visit to Berlin, on his way to the NATO summit, further points to the development of a war economy, closely linked to those of the US and its allies, all of which are militarising rapidly. People have responded with shock and anger to the military display, with many likening it to something that would be seen under a militarised, dictatorial regime. The real legacy of CORE is the continued decimation of public education, highlighted by the closure of 50 schools following the defeat of the 2012 teachers strike, with this June marking the 10-year anniversary of those closures. Two workers died in an explosion at a Pemex oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico while workers at Alaska's White Pass & Yukon Route took a strike vote after six years of fruitless talks. The $107 billion New York City budget restores some programs that the city's right-wing Democratic Mayor Eric Adams hoped to cut, cuts other essential services and delays a much more massive program of austerity to the following months and years. Immediately following the outbreak of the Ukraine war, the German government announced the biggest rearmament programme since Hitler. Now the enormous costs of this are being passed onto the working class through austerity and social cutbacks.
