A powerful strike movement has begun to emerge in the US and internationally in recent weeks, involving tens of thousands of workers across different industries, coming into headlong conflict with the union apparatuses. The simultaneous heatwaves across the world are a direct result of global warming. A recently published study found that since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate of new cases of type 1 diabetes in children has increased far beyond expectations. The agreement to avert a strike is a sellout that resolves nothing for Yellow freight workers and does not commit the company to pay a penny of its $50 million pension obligations. The decision marks yet another miserable capitulation by the union bureaucracy to the pro-war, pro-austerity Liberal government, which made clear its intention to employ ruthless state repression if dockers had resumed strike action. Chants of "One struggle, one fight, we support SAG-AFTRA's strike!" rang across Leicester Square at Friday's rally of Equity members. Under the proposed union-management deal, API workers will receive an average nominal wage rise of 4.5 per annum over four years, keeping their wages lower than their counterparts in other warehouses.
