The shutdown of major portions of the entertainment industry in the US, in the first "double strike" by writers and actors since 1960, has enormous implications. In the Second World War, Germany's ruling class committed the greatest crimes in history with the Holocaust and the war of extermination against the Soviet Union. Now, once again, it will stop at nothing to pursue its imperialist goals. With Tuesday designated a "Day of Resistance," they are protesting against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right and ultra-religious government's introduction of legislation aimed at curtailing the powers of the judiciary as the crucial step toward assuming dictatorial powers. Dave Ward's depiction of the ballot as an exercise in democracy is a travesty. The CWU bureaucracy waged a vicious and targeted campaign against all those advocating a No vote. At a rally attended by hundreds of workers in Vancouver on Sunday, the ILWU downplayed the imminent danger of strike-breaking legislation. Above all, it issued no call to mobilize the working class across Canada and its 22,000 US West Coast members—themselves without a contract for over a year—to defeat such an attack. Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday showed that the consumer price index was unchanged from a year ago – the lowest rate in more than two years – while factory gate prices continued to fall, an indication of lowered demand. The Victorian Health Department last month announced that six respiratory clinics dealing with COVID-19 infections will shut due to the cessation of state government funding. The latest disasters in the United States are a sharp warning of the worsening effects of climate change, caused by the profit-driven exploitation of the environment under capitalism. On Monday, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), announced that its tentative agreement covering roughly 115,000 full-time and 5,000 part-time education employees in the New York City public school system (DOE) had been ratified. In an attempt to shut down the boycott entirely, the UCU agreed last week to a new meeting with the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA). Since imposing a pay deal of between 5 and 8 percent in March, the UCEA has insisted it will not consider any further increase.
