Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. Trump's attempt to block previously approved Congressional funding not only threatens social programs that benefit millions, but is blatantly unconstitutional. Pictures bear comparison only with the scenes of devastation in the aftermath of the Second World War. According to the United Nations, 92 percent of dwellings are either destroyed, severely or partially damaged. On Monday, President Donald Trump ordered the construction of a new missile defense system covering the United States, the latest move in a years-long drive spanning multiple administrations to massively expand US nuclear capabilities. Trump's announcement confirms that the attack on birthright citizenship is aimed at paving the way for sweeping attacks on the democratic rights of the entire population. That yet another large media corporation acted so swiftly to remove a television personality for expressing the truth on a personal, non-public social media account dramatically illustrates how obsequious corporate America has become to Trump's openly fascist administration. In line with Trump's executive order to end all collaboration with the WHO, the CDC has been instructed to end all communications and work with the international public health agency. Ali Abunimah, executive director of Chicago-based Electronic Intifada, was released by Swiss authorities on Monday and put on a plane bound for Istanbul after being held in detention for three days in Zürich. Sarah Schwartz has been venomously targeted, for exposing bogus claims of far-right and conservative forces to be opposing antisemitism, when they are simply supporting Israeli war crimes. Gia Coppola's depiction of aging entertainers in "America's adult playground" is a turn to serious subject matter, and the results are generally impressive. In March 2021, 38 Alton plantation workers were sacked and 22 of them arrested on trumped up charges. Four years later the Labor Tribunal has refused to reinstate the workers and the 22 are still being dragged through the courts. The election will be referendum between pro-US and pro-China camps of the elite, and more than any other factor will be shaped by speculation over relations with Trump's America. At all costs, the trade unions, politicians and big business want to avoid industrial action at BVG, as across other sectors and companies, in the midst of the current federal election campaign. The e-commerce giant has extended its reach into smaller markets and rural areas, a move that has significant economic implications for rural carriers and raises serious questions about the future of the United States Postal Service. The crisis facing the LA Fire Department is a microcosm of the broader contradictions of capitalism. It highlights the urgent need for a socialist program that prioritizes public welfare over private profit. A town hall meeting in Santa Monica, escalated into angry exchanges between survivors of the Pacific Palisades fire and an EPA official about the 18-month timeline for clearing debris left by the devastating fire. Mental health services are disastrously under-funded and under-resourced after decades of government cuts. Starmer's inquiry will not address the problems in the National Health Service, social services and schools which prevented them from intervening effectively to shift Rudakubana from the path he was on. Nor will it pose the question: what are the psychological pressures at work in today's society which drove him down that path in the first place?
