In the course of the SGP election campaign, it has become clear that there is deep unrest among workers, young people and sections of the middle class, and that a social explosion is looming. Driven by internal crises and faced with the rapidly declining position of US and European imperialism on the world scale, the African continent and its rich resources are increasingly seen as a necessary means for their other war fronts. The move comes as the rail unions are attempting to push through another round of sellout contracts which are even worse than the deal imposed by Congress in 2022. The strike comes on the eve of Trump's inauguration and the impending escalation of attacks on public health, medical workers and the working class as a whole. While the government aims to crush workers' opposition, the union bureaucracy is promoting illusions that decent pay and conditions can be achieved through backroom negotiations and legal manoeuvres. The pressure on the Lula government to deepen its austerity measures will intensify this year amid an escalation of multiple global crises and Trump's return to the US presidency. Santiago teachers struck January 8 over layoffs and other cuts, while 1,800 strawberry pickers in the San Quintin Valley held a three-day strike against El Milagro de Baja agribusiness. As the government imposes drastic austerity measures and diverts more funds to the military, it has announced plans to dock workers' pay for partial strikes and work-to-rule industrial action. The AHA passed a resolution condemning the ongoing genocide in Gaza and calling the destruction of education in Gaza "scholasticide."
