Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. Not a single Democrat objected to the barrage of fascist threats made by Trump in the course of his inaugural address. The president lacks the power to issue executive orders that contravene constitutional provisions like the 14th Amendment's guarantee of birthright citizenship, but that did not stop Trump. That Biden felt it necessary to pre-emptively pardon his family members and political allies belies Democrat claims that "democracy" has been affirmed by the peaceful transfer of power to Trump. The charity reported that the wealth of the world's billionaires grew from $13 trillion to $15 trillion in 2024, a rate that is three times faster than in 2023. Israel's entire narrative surrounding the events of October 7 has been shown to be a pack of lies. The protests, which were organized by the Women's March and various appendages of the Democratic Party, paled in size in comparison to the massive rallies held in response to the first Trump administration coming to power in January 2017. Labor's Foreign Minister Penny Wong participated in the inauguration and has not issued a critical word of the fascist spectacle, including billionaire Elon Musk's Nazi salute. The murky disappearances of critical archives point further to the high-level involvement of the ruling apparatuses in the US, UK and Australia in the removal of the Whitlam Labor government. The prohibition of an IYSSE lecture at Peradeniya University was followed by a blanket ban on all student meetings on or off campus, which sets a dangerous precedent for all universities. In the run-up to February's federal elections, Germany's ruling class is systematically pushing ahead with its military buildup and war preparations. Workers were only told by email in December, "This is a resignation scheme, not a voluntary or compulsory redundancy scheme." The fact is, anyone applying to the scheme faces the outcome of losing their job. If it goes forward, the strike will be one of the first major labor struggles under the second Trump administration. The Palisades and Eaton fires, which continue to ravage large parts of Southern California, serve as stark reminders of the systemic failures in disaster management under capitalism. The funding is a cynical maneuver on the part of the Democratic Party to assuage widespread fear among millions of immigrants and their families and friends, while deflecting attention from its own horrendous record on deportations and decades-long assaults on immigrants. After an exceptionally lethal year at the prison, the warden was forced out, but families are still awaiting answers on the causes of their loved ones' deaths. This year marks the 275th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death. In December, over four million viewers watched the German TV film as a prelude to the anniversary. Hundreds of Argentine healthcare workers protested last week over lack of medications, while a walkout by Alberta support staff could spread to another 7,000 workers over the coming 10 days. The police crackdown on Saturday's national Gaza demonstration in London underscored the need for a political perspective which can animate a mass movement against British imperialism at home and abroad.
