Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. Zelensky's visit to Berlin marks a new stage in the intervention of German imperialism in the war in Ukraine. It continues a dark tradition. Already in the 20th century, German imperialism tried twice to subdue Russia militarily and failed. Now the ruling class is trying a third time. Rapidly rising prices for basic necessities have devastated household budgets, forcing working people to borrow on their credit cards or take equity out of refinancing their homes to pay their bills. The outcome reveals the bankruptcy of the bourgeois opposition, which the pseudo-left supported as an "alternative" to Erdoğan's right-wing government. Central to NATO's plans to defeat Russia and force regime change in Moscow is aerial supremacy over the Ukrainian battlefield. Speaking to reporters after the talks, Zelensky said, "We want to create this jet coalition." Scott Higgins, a machinist who was nearing retirement, is the latest victim of the wave of deadly accidents in the US oil refinery and petrochemical industry. The cause of the fire at Loafers Lodge in Wellington remains unknown, but firefighters have stated that lives could have been saved if the building had a sprinkler system. Striking writers expressed their determination to win decent wages and conditions in a profession increasingly turning into "gig" work. The union announced a tentative agreement with Oakland Unified School District at 3:00 in the morning, unilaterally ending the strike. The tentative agreement gives workers essentially nothing above the district's original proposal and paves the way for massive budget cuts. Sunday night's meeting of the Postal Workers Rank-and-File Committee adopted a resolution aimed at galvanising mass opposition to the CWU's sell-out agreement Royal Mail workers are continuing to speak out against the brutal work regime being enforced by the company and the Communication Workers Union. In an effort to disrupt and derail 340,000 UPS workers in their contract battle this year, the DSA has begun organizing "Strike Ready" campaigns to subordinate workers to the Teamsters bureaucracy and the Democratic Party. Under conditions of an escalating social crisis, the longtime Democratic Party official, backed by the union apparatus and the Democratic Socialists of America, is being brought forward in an effort to contain and suppress the class struggle in the country's third-largest city. The election results demonstrate the widespread hostility to the military, which seized power in a coup in 2014 and has maintained control through its anti-democratic constitution and police state measures. Despite a 97 percent vote for industrial action, the NTEU has proposed only minimal action and kept amorphous its "outstanding issues" in negotiations with management. The meeting focused on the war in Ukraine since the European governments are diverting funds from social spending to war. The poll reflects a groundswell of support for Assange, despite more than a decade of government and media lies and calumny. US President Joe Biden and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met at the White House on Friday as Spain is set to assume the EU Council's rotating presidency. The determined stand taken by tens of thousands of primary school teachers must be the starting point for a rebellion against the pro-capitalist trade unions and a fight against austerity.
