As the death toll surges in the Ukraine war, the United States is demanding a renewed military offensive by Kiev, calling for a fight to the last Ukrainian. London's Metropolitan Police arrested 52 people for offences including affray, public order offences, breach of the peace and the sinister charge of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance. The real number of deaths is likely to be higher as several local authorities did not respond to freedom of Information requests. This is a warning not only to Teamsters in the television and movie industry but also the 340,000 rank-and-file members at UPS whose contract expires July 31. The UTLA conducted a year-long campaign, in conjunction with the Democrats, to wear down opposition to another austerity contract. The mass shooting at an outlet mall north of Dallas was the 200th such event in the US since the beginning of 2023. It is unknown at this time if the driver, who is allegedly not cooperating with police, intentionally targeted the immigrants waiting at the bus stop outside the only migrant and homeless shelter in the South Texas border town. NATO's involvement in the region will only increase the danger of war while providing Japan the excuse to further remilitarize. While the unions calling the May Day rally represented more than 100,000 workers only 1,500 attended, another indication of the deepening distrust of the union apparatus among broad layers of the working class. The Graduate Employees' Union and its parent union, the American Federation of Teachers, have de facto shut down the month-long strike by grad student workers at U-M despite broad support among faculty, staff and students. In their struggle for a living wage, healthcare workers at Jamaica Hospital and Flushing Hospital are on the verge of conducting what would be the first strike of New York City physicians since 1990. One worker told the WSWS, "Flames were high and there was a lot of smoke, but nobody could hear the fire alarm." The few token measures taken by the district to address this crisis are entirely inadequate to ensure a safe return to school. The murder of Reginald Clay took place in an apartment gangway in front of his friends. These stoppages were limited affairs, tightly stage-managed by the HSU bureaucracy. A press release announcing the walkouts was published less than 24 hours before the first action at Tweed, where workers received no advance notice at all.
