Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. By allowing the COVID-19 public health emergency declaration to expire, the White House has codified into law that the virus will remain permanently embedded in society, continuing to infect, disable and kill masses of people for the foreseeable future. As thousands of immigrants tried to enter to the country before the expiration of Title 42, CBP announced on Thursday that 28,000 immigrants were being held in facilities built for 10,000 people. The ex-president rehashed false claims of a "rigged election" while pledging to pardon the fascist thugs who attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Withdrawal of the ban by the ESG followed a wave of angry protests against what was clearly a flagrant act of political censorship. We are publishing here a selection of protest emails from readers sent to the ESG to protest against the political censorship of the IYSSE at the University of Frankfurt. While determined to pursue its war aims of crushing Moscow, Washington is seeking to prevent Beijing from taking advantage of cracks appearing in the NATO alliance as the conflict grinds on. Muharrem İnce's withdrawal from the presidential race could lead to Kılıçdaroğlu, NATO's preferred candidate, winning the election in the first round. At least 13 million Soviet soldiers and 14 million civilians lost their lives in the war. But at the Berlin commemorative events this year, the displaying of the Soviet flag was forbidden. The anniversary of the book burnings must be a warning to workers and youth worldwide. Today the same contradictions are developing that led to barbarism in the 20th century. The danger of fascism and world war is back. Caes David Gruesbeck, a 20-year-old forklift driver, died on Monday from injuries from an accident involving an overhead conveyor system. Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson as well as the pseudo-left Democratic Socialist Caucus of aldermen on Chicago's city council have been totally silent on the shooting. The lenient sentences are yet another example of how the police operate with almost complete impunity in the continued string of killings throughout the country despite the years of protests and promises from Democratic politicians for reform. The Biden administration, the courts, the Democratic Party and its DSA faction are working to promote Fain as having "reformed" the UAW. Fain's "rebranding" campaign is a critical part of this initiative, and it will fall flat. The Clarios strike in Ohio is a critical fight for all autoworkers as the auto transnationals seek to force the cost of electric vehicle production onto the backs of workers. Wickremesinghe's initiative is a cynical and desperate attempt to dissipate rising popular anger over brutal government attacks on social conditions. The cost of the two biggest items affecting the government's financial position—the massive expansion of military spending under AUKUS and the tax cuts for the better-off and wealthy—were not included in the budget's forward estimates. The Oakland Education Association has sought to divert teachers' anger over terrible conditions into support for the same Democratic politicians who planned the budget cuts and school closures. The closure will eliminate a thousand jobs and devastate an entire region, but the unions are blocking any worker resistance, insisting their focus is on job-search assistance to "ease frustration and concern." Of two albums released on the same day, one celebrates personal relationships, while the other acknowledges the pressures that challenge them. Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters opened his German tour at the Barclays Arena in Hamburg on Sunday. Without the initiation of a rank-and-file rebellion, workers will go down to a crushing defeat with dire consequences for the future of the NHS. In Italy 30,000 protest against the labour decree that will slash wages, while unions try to suppress general strike calls and promote the Democratic Party; UK stoppages continue over pay and conditions including strikes by ambulance workers, oil and gas offshore workers, civil servants, lecturers and London Heathrow airport staff; doctors walk out for a week at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital over underfunded health system while civil servants plan walkout in Abia State over unpaid salaries and pensions About the WSWS The World Socialist Web Site is published by the International Committee of the Fourth International, the world Trotskyist movement, and its affiliated sections in the Socialist Equality Parties around the world.
