Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. There is no room for compromise and nothing to negotiate with this government, and the way forward for the working class is to bring it down through a general strike. Thousands of writers took to the picket lines Tuesday and expressed a willingness to fight back against the few corporations that dominate not only film and television, but the rest of society as well. This is the report delivered by Alex Lantier, national secretary of the Parti de l'égalité socialiste (PES), to the 2023 International May Day Online Rally held on April 30. This is the report delivered by Deepal Jayasekera, the General Secretary of the Socialist Equality Party in Sri Lanka, to the 2023 International May Day Online Rally held on April 30. On April 25, the IYSSE at San Diego State University hosted a public lecture, "The war in Ukraine and how to stop it," presented by WSWS International Editorial Board Chairman David North. It was the first meeting in Germany of an international series on the causes of the NATO proxy war in Ukraine held by the youth and student movement of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI). On Tuesday, the Biden White House said that it would deploy 1,500 troops from the Army and Marines to the southern border as part of a crackdown on migrants seeking asylum when Title 42 immigration rules are lifted on May 11. As is common knowledge within ruling class circles, both parties are using the artificially created debt ceiling crisis to push through major cuts in social programs. The US federal safety agency's fine of $156,250 for the deaths of Ben and Max Morrissey was insulting enough but the giant energy conglomerate is still contesting it. Hundreds of autoworkers at the Clarios battery plant in Holland, Ohio voted to reject a sellout tentative agreement brought to them by the UAW last week. The financier and exploiter and procurer of teenage girls was found dead in his prison cell in August 2019, a death which remains unexplained by prison officials and the federal Department of Justice. The past two months have seen three of the four largest bank failures in US history as analysts warn of the fall of one domino after another. A Frankfurt administrative court determined that Roger Waters' concert scheduled for May 28 must "go ahead" as contractually agreed and that the rock musician "has artistic license to warn us all of the dangers of the current resurgence of fascism in the West." The election of the Christian Democrat Kai Wegner as Berlin Mayor, and thus the head of the state government, has revealed the character of the administration now running Germany's capital. Wegner was most likely elected with the votes of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). CFPE delegates to the Australian Education Union's Victorian state conference will expose and oppose the union's record and raise the need to develop independent rank-and-file committees in every school. The Reserve Bank of Australia, backed by the Labor government, is intent on suppressing household spending enough to increase unemployment, as a battering ram against workers' wages struggles. This is a serious warning to workers that, despite militant rhetoric designed to lull them to sleep, the union bureaucracy and Washington are cooking up a sequel to last year's pro-company rail contract at UPS. A "yes" vote for the Voice is being presented as a patriotic duty, necessary to unite the nation or complete the national unity of Australia. Despite official claims that the pandemic "emergency" is over, COVID-19 is still tearing through schools, workplaces and aged care facilities, fuelling a crisis in the public health system. The attempt to manufacture "left" credentials for the new UAW administration is taking place at the same time as DSA members are being placed in the upper echelons of the UAW bureaucracy. The World Socialist Web Site is publishing further correspondence from postal workers in Britain exposing the sweatshop conditions being enforced by Royal Mail, with the full collaboration of the Communication Workers Union. Sir John Bell, an immunologist who was a member of the UK Covid Vaccine Taskforce and former government chief scientific adviser, warned last month that Britain is now no more prepared for a new novel pandemic than it was for COVID-19. Israel's parliament, reconvening on Sunday after a one-month recess, is expected to pass legislation that will enable the government to control the appointments to the Supreme Court.
