Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. At every level of government—county, state and federal—the profit interests of big business and the strategic concerns of American imperialism blocked any effort to protect the population from deadly storms and floods. US President Donald Trump received Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a formal dinner on Monday, during which both men reiterated their plans to forcibly remove the Palestinian population from Gaza in preparation for its annexation. Police handcuffed several people and carried them into vans. Among them was 83-year-old Reverend Sue Parfitt. The emergency powers effectively establish a mini-police state where they are invoked, enabling police to establish roadblocks and to conduct searches without any reasonable grounds. The protests mark the 35th anniversary of the 1990 Saba Saba uprising, when sections of the bourgeois opposition led demonstrations demanding multiparty elections and an end to the Western-backed rule of President Daniel arap Moi. Trump has sent letters to 14 countries saying that the massive tariff hikes announced on April 2 would be imposed on August 1, with two of the most significant diktats issued to so-called US allies Japan and South Korea. It must be said plainly: the strike is in danger as long as the AFSCME bureaucrats retain control. Victory can be achieved, but only if workers take control over the strike themselves. Ryan Starnes was killed June 30 when he was hit by a large excavator bucket while he was working in a dug-out ditch. Joselyn Chipantiza-Sisalema, a 20-year-old student and asylum seeker, was abducted by the immigration Gestapo as she left a routine immigration hearing. The measures spearheaded by Democrats in California's new budget will have disastrous consequences for the vast majority of workers and immigrants, exposing the fraud of the "sanctuary state." On June 2, Microsoft expanded a long run of layoffs by announcing a workforce reduction of up to 4 percent, or about 9,100. Appeals to the Victorian Labor government are futile under conditions where it is slashing expenditure and public sector jobs to reduce government debt at the behest of the financial markets and credit rating agencies. Industrial accidents have surged under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, whose alignment with global capitalist interests has further eroded work safety protections. Police in Montevideo, Uruguay attacked a peaceful protest by striking fishermen, while nurses in Pennsylvania are prepared to strike Wellspan Health over work overload and low pay. On May 31, Kroger workers in Indianapolis, nearly 4,000 members of UFCW Local 700, voted by 75 percent to reject a sellout tentative contract negotiated by the union bureaucracy and are now demanding immediate strike action. The cultural consciousness of posterity is enriched by Wilson's 1962–1967 output. His greatest accomplishments during that period remain relevant, genuine, substantial, and intensely moving.
