The capitalist ruling class is hurtling toward world war and dictatorship. As reviewed in yesterday's WSWS perspective, right-wing German historian Sönke Neitzel's declaration that Europe is experiencing its "last summer of peace" captures the war fever gripping the ruling elites internationally. Amid the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza and the US-NATO war against Russia in Ukraine, the imperialist powers are preparing far greater crimes.
We are approaching six months of the Trump administration, which is carrying out an unprecedented assault against democratic rights. Militarized raids on immigrant workers are escalating daily, and top White House officials have declared Los Angeles to be in a state of "insurrection." The government functions as a lawless regime, embodying the break of ruling elites everywhere with democratic forms of rule.
Events like the recent Texas floods—where more than 130 people died in an entirely preventable catastrophe—reveal the devastating consequences of decades of bipartisan social counterrevolution. This was not a "natural disaster" but a political crime, the result of collapsing infrastructure, gutted emergency services, and the Trump administration's ongoing social wrecking operation, which funnels resources into war and tax cuts for the rich while abandoning even the most basic needs of the population.
There is also growing opposition. Mass protests have erupted against the Trump administration, following the protests of tens of millions against the genocide in Gaza.
The strike by municipal workers in Philadelphia this month marked an initial and significant expression of the entry of the working class into struggle. But the strike was abruptly shut down in the middle of the night by AFSCME, which is presently seeking to ram through a concessions contract based on lies and threats. In response, workers formed a rank-and-file committee with assistance from the World Socialist Web Site to demand the expansion of the strike and to launch a broader struggle against the entire political establishment.
These events underscore a fundamental truth: The working class is ready to fight, but it must be armed with a clear political program and perspective. That is what the World Socialist Web Site provides every day.
In a world saturated with lies and propaganda from the corporate media and capitalist governments, the WSWS stands as the essential voice of the international working class.
But this critical work depends entirely on the support of our readers. We do not take money from advertisers, corporations, or the state. Every article, perspective, and statement we publish is made possible by the donations of workers, students, and socialist-minded people across the globe.
