Australian Labor government, teacher unions pitch bogus school funding promises in election campaign The bipartisan promise to "fully fund" public education is as much of a fraud as the entire official election campaign. Whichever party assumes office will deepen the decades-long assault on public schools. The day-long shutdown of Facebook reveals the extensive powers given to police under the new Counter-Terrorism Act and the threat posed to basic democratic rights. The business of suffering: Los Angeles politicians aim to turn homelessness into a source of profits The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a budget containing tens of millions in cuts to homelessness services. The group Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty said in a statement on Tanzi's execution, "It is not justice to take a physically and mentally broken man, strap him to a gurney, and commit premeditated murder. This is revenge, plain and simple."
