Sir Keir Starmer's right-wing government—with just nine months in office—is now the only Labour government in history that has increased child poverty under its rule. In Parliament last Wednesday, Starmer denounced the strike and demanded it end. Two days later police were sent to break up picket lines. The shock-and-awe tactics used by the CWU and Royal Mail to enforce the USO pilot scheme is proving insufficient to quell growing suspicion and anger. Allegations of "terrorism" and "threats to national security" are being exploited by the JVP/NPP government to intimidate and silence critics of Israel's mass murder in Gaza. Doctors are demanding a 30 percent salary increase, safe working conditions and other measures to stop escalating cases of burnout amongst doctors. The question of war shaped the programme of the book fair. On the one hand, warmongers were given a stage for their great power propaganda, while on the other hand, an increasing anti-war sentiment could be seen among many visitors. Today's immigrant jails will be utilized tomorrow to detain workers who oppose the Trump administration's fascistic government. The sellout deal worked out by the Chicago Teachers Union and Mayor Brandon Johnson not only fails to meet the needs of teachers and students, it aims to demobilize teachers as popular opposition grows to Trump's war on education and democratic rights.
