What social and historical conditions have produced the Trump administration? How is it possible to explain not only his election but his reelection? Such questions are rarely asked, let alone seriously answered—because they point not to Trump's personal attributes but to the character of American capitalism itself.
Trump is the direct political representative of the financial oligarchy, personifying its criminality and social parasitism. The oligarchy accumulated over $1 trillion in wealth in 2024 alone, and Trump's regime is actively funneling resources from the working class to enrich this tiny elite. Through his "Department of Government Efficiency," headed by centi-billionaire Elon Musk, tens of thousands of federal workers have already been fired, and massive cuts to social programs are underway.
Democratic forms of rule are incompatible with the massive concentration of wealth or the policies necessary to maintain this wealth.
Yet, Trump's dictatorial measures have already provoked immense resistance. Millions of workers and youth participated in protests across 1,500 cities and towns across the US this month, with further protests planned on May 1. There is a growing determination to oppose dictatorship, war, and inequality.
But spontaneous opposition alone is not enough. The Democratic Party has proven itself incapable of and unwilling to defend democratic rights, consistently enabling Trump's agenda. Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez function as mechanisms to divert anger back into this bankrupt party, which fundamentally represents the same financial oligarchy.
The basic question now confronting millions is: What is to be done?
The only viable solution is a decisive break with both capitalist parties and the entire political establishment. This requires a socialist and internationalist strategy to abolish capitalism, the root cause of war, dictatorship, and inequality.
The urgent task is to build a revolutionary leadership to guide these struggles. This is the central aim of the Socialist Equality Party and the International Committee of the Fourth International.
Join workers and youth from around the world at the International May Day Online Rally on May 3, organized by the World Socialist Web Site and the International Committee of the Fourth International, and become an active participant in this fight.
