Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. Condolences from Obama and Biden cannot cover up their responsibility for the US-NATO war which devastated Libya and set the stage for the death of at least 20,000 in flood-ravaged Derna. With the auto companies continuing to resist their demands, rank-and-file workers are denouncing the impotent selective strike policy of the UAW and calling for an industry wide strike by all 150,000 GM, Ford and Stellantis workers. "If you can hold the line and defeat the tier system, years of stagnant wages, and the empty promises of the UAW bureaucrats—you will win for all of us." The energy transition, as it currently stands, has little to do with stopping global warming and protecting the environment. It has much more to do with control over the world's resources, supply chains and advanced trade exports. Workers at Stellantis plants in the Detroit area are outraged that the UAW's selective strike has opened the door for management to fire workers for petty infractions. The decision of the Christian Democrats and Liberal Democrats to pass a law to lower the land transfer tax with the votes of the far-right Alternative for Germany is another step toward giving the fascists access to the levers of power. To the extent that the purpose of the speaking tour was to undermine genuine socialist opposition to the war and bolster the official war propaganda, it can be characterized as a fiasco The crisis of the political system in the US reached a new level of intensity over the past week, with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's announcement Tuesday of an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, the announcement Thursday by a Justice Department special counsel of a criminal indictment against Biden's son, Hunter, and the growing prospect of a shutdown of the federal government when the current fiscal year ends on September 30. While attendees were undoubtedly motivated by concern over the dire conditions facing indigenous people, the rallies had an essentially right-wing, nationalist and pro-government character. The inclusion of so many ministers who are close to the military and the monarchy makes clear that Pheu Thai has abandoned any pretensions to represent a democratic alternative. The vote by the Board of Governors to approve the cuts came despite almost unanimous opposition from the student body and faculty and marks a new stage in the assault on public education and the right to culture by the working class in the US and internationally. The World Socialist Web Site spoke with students, faculty and staff both before and after the hearing as to why they opposed the cuts and what needed to be done to fight them. Metalworkers need to take action independently of the unions to prevent a new sellout contract and to improve declining living conditions. This column profiles important historical events which took place during this week, 25 years ago, 50 years ago, 75 years ago and 100 years ago. CWU leader Dave Ward delivers more pro-company propaganda as rank-and-file anger grows at Royal Mail Referring to the £600 million paid to shareholders last year, Ward stated, "they created the financial crisis when they gave all that money away" but scolded workers, "we have to move on in our union", "moving beyond blame" and "moaning about Royal Mail" to work together. Penn has become one of the most fervent and unhinged supporters of the fascist-infested Ukrainian regime of Volodymyr Zelensky. The trade union representing Wilko workers, the GMB, has played its usual role during the entire affair, supporting the owners over the workers. Even though it was aware of the retailer's dire financial straits, the union did not warn workers of the threat to their jobs, nor did it mount any struggle in their defence.
