Dear reader, On August 20, an historic commemoration of the exile of Leon Trotsky was held on the Turkish island of Prinkipo. "An Island at the Center of World History: Leon Trotsky on Prinkipo" commemorated Trotsky's exile from 1929-1933 and explained both its historical and contemporary significance.

It was the first ever meeting commemorating Trotsky's stay on the Island, where he wrote masterpieces such as the History of the Russian Revolution, My Life, and numerous articles on the dangers of fascism in Germany.
The speeches given by World Socialist Web Site International Editorial Board Chairman David North, WSWS Editorial Board member Eric London and Ulaş Ateşçi, editor of Mehring Publishing in Turkey and a leading member of the Socialist Equality Group in Turkey, were warmly received by an overflow audience and thousands more viewing online.
As David North stated in his speech to the event: "More than 80 years after his assassination, Trotsky remains an extraordinarily contemporary presence. More than any other political leader of the last century, his ideas retain undiminished relevance. The writings of Leon Trotsky remain essential reading not only to understand the tumultuous events of the 20th century. They provide a critical and indispensable framework for the comprehension of present day reality."
The holding of the event signifies there is a growing world audience for the international socialist perspective of Trotskyism.
