We are commemorating May Day this year amid unprecedented events. The US-backed genocide in Gaza is now in its 7th month. On the "home front," both parties are organizing violent attacks on student protests and effectively moving to ban all opposition to war. Meanwhile, new wars or escalations of existing wars are being prepared against Russia, Iran and China.
The international working class must become the center of a powerful mass movement against war. In a recent statement, the International Workers Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees called on workers to prepare a "nationwide and international strike to force an end to the assault on the basic right to free speech."
That has to be connected to a fight against the source of war: the capitalist system. The statement warned: "Nothing is more dangerous than for workers to hope that this is just a momentary crisis that will pass once the ruling class comes to its senses," concluding, "This means that the fight against war must be connected to the fight for socialism and the expropriation of the super-rich warmongers, using the resources they monopolize to meet human needs."
Saturday's May Day rally will be a major event in building such a movement. You will hear from leaders of the socialist movement around the world, as well as from workers engaged in struggles, who will speak on the key strategic experiences of the working class in every country. They will lay out a common international strategy on which workers can fight.
