The murky stabbing incident, like another a few weeks ago, was immediately seized on to whip up an atmosphere of fear and hysteria over purported terrorist threats. Faculty vow not to "stay silent," but denounce the use of state power to repress free speech and impose mass arrests on protesting students in Detroit and nationally. A group of RISD students opposing the genocide in Gaza have occupied a campus building, renaming it after Fathi Ghaben, a Palestinian artist who died in Gaza after being denied permission by Israeli authorities to travel abroad for medical treatment. Donald Tusk's government, which in the election campaign had promised to observe humanitarian norms, is now acting more harshly against defenceless refugees than its ultra-right predecessor.
