Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. This is the text of the introductory speech delivered by WSWS International Editorial Board Chairman David North to the 2024 International May Day Online Rally. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reiterated Sunday Israel's intention to assault Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip where more than a million displaced people are sheltering. Following President Biden's green light last week for police assaults on peaceful campus protests against the US/Israeli genocide in Gaza, both the scale of police violence and the fever chart of arrests continue to rise. On Friday, around 150 students gathered for a sit-in in front of the entrance to Berlin's Humboldt University to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza. Police violently disbanded the peaceful gathering, at the behest of the university administration. Spain's petty-bourgeois Anticapitalistas party aims to divert mass anger over the genocide by calling on workers and youth "not to vote for pro-genocide parties." Thousands of people turned out across the UK to demonstrate against the Gaza genocide again this weekend. Socialist Equality Party members attended the rallies and spoke with some of those taking part. As has often been the case throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC is implementing this policy shift during a lull in rates of infections and hospitalizations across the country. A meeting of the defence chiefs of the US, Japan, Australia and the Philippines is another significant step in Washington's encirclement of China in preparation for war. While the rank and file is pushing for national strike action to force an end to genocide, the UAW bureaucracy is stalling for time. It backs "Genocide Joe" Biden and even was responsible for allowing cops to enter the encampment at UCLA. A meeting of the Committee for Public Education denounced the arrest of the courageous Ukrainian socialist and demanded his immediate freedom. The leaders of the imperialist powers responsible for the detention and pending extradition from Britain to the US of WikiLeaks founder and publisher Julian Assange remained silent on his illegal imprisonment on United Nation's World Press Freedom Day. If the purported spy ring was Chinese, there would have been hysterical front-page coverage for days. NATO bombs Chinese embassy in Belgrade; Willy Brandt resigns; police attack Canadian asbestos miners; J. Edgar Hoover becomes FBI director. Director Roman Polanski's gripping film pays tribute to the hardboiled novel while offering a searing indictment of an irredeemably corrupt ruling class. The films that emerged in the early- to mid-1970s represented the highest point reached by American filmmaking since the anti-communist witch-hunts of the 1940s and 1950s. Winston Peters faces defamation action following his verbal attack on former Australian foreign minister Bob Carr who criticized NZ's plans to become part of the anti-China AUKUS pact. A simultaneous strike by rail workers at both companies would quickly bring the country's economy to its knees and significantly impact the North American economy as a whole. For this reason, it is safe to assume that discussions are already under way between the trade union-backed Trudeau Liberal government and the Biden administration on how to scuttle the rail strike. The Socialist Equality Party rejects the call to sink political differences to bring about one big anti-Labour Gaza protest vote.
