The move is a fig leaf which will do nothing to alleviate the long-term effects of the disaster on residents, the health effects of which will linger for years. The perspective of appealing to governments has failed. The alternative is a turn to the growing struggles of the working class to overturn the profit system, the root cause of the climate crisis. Millions of people—both homebuyers and renters—face severe financial stress and the danger of losing their homes, compounded by the soaring cost of living. A flurry of cold weather and blizzards brought monumental amounts of snow which have trapped many residents in their homes and without road access for more than a week.
