Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The downing of the $30 million military drone is a dangerous milestone in the escalating war between the United States and Russia. The weekend before the latest inflation figures were released, the United Auto Workers rammed through a contract at Caterpillar containing a cut in real wages of up to 20 percent by 2029. On the heels of the collapse and US government bailout of Silicon Valley Bank on Monday, the social media monopoly Meta announced 10,000 more layoffs. In endorsing and participating in the demonstration on March 18, the IYSSE seeks to advance a revolutionary socialist strategy that directs the anti-war movement toward an open struggle against capitalism. To advance a campaign in alliance with the far-right to pressure British and US imperialism to "go gentle into that good night" as a means of opposing war is politically grotesque. It articulates the position of a layer of the petty-bourgeoisie frightened by the threat of war, but hostile to a struggle against that threat by the working class and possessed of a truly boundless belief on the long-term viability of the capitalist system. Postal workers challenged the latest update from the CWU on its Facebook and Twitter accounts, explaining that the joint statement on revision activity had produced no let-up in the management offensive and had instead seen the CWU enforce these attacks. We made the decision to found the Caterpillar Workers Rank-and-File Committee earlier this year because we understood, based on the UAW bureaucracy's previous record of sellouts and betrayals, that it would not fight for us, and that any real struggle for workers' rights and interests would have to be organized from below. Behind the scenes there is a dirty fight over which faction of the UAW bureaucracy will dole out high paid positions and control the union's $1.1 billion in assets. The Fed and the FDIC, with the full backing of the Biden administration, which has pledged to do "whatever is needed," have justified their actions, full coverage for uninsured depositors at SVB as well as increased liquidity provisions for banks, on the grounds of "systemic risk." While the official response has been muted, US media commentaries point to deep concerns in Washington that Beijing has stolen a march on the US and is playing a more prominent role in the strategic energy-rich Middle East. The two events in Sri Lanka were part of a global series being held by the IYSSE to fight for the end of the war in Ukraine and to prevent the US-led plans for conflict with China. The increase in this mass violence cannot simply be explained by individual motives and problems. It has deeper social causes that are systematically ignored by politicians and the media. The observations and conclusions from the second autopsy strongly buttress the insistent claim by Manuel "Tortuguita" Terán's mother and many other activists that he was "assassinated in cold blood." While beating back management demands to cut the number of full time musicians, wages will remain mired at essentially poverty levels. Our campaigns found a great deal of concern about the rabid headlines during the week, declaring a "Red Alert" to prepare the population, the military and the entire economy for a war against China within three years. The school estate is being run down as part of austerity cuts to pay for the banking collapse in 2008/9, the pandemic bailout, and the defence budget increases for the war in Ukraine—all at the expense of the health and safety of pupils and staff.
