Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The UK government has launched a systematic assault on democratic rights, banning demonstrations, making major inroads on the freedom of speech, and flagrantly disregarding human rights laws. Israel is using a four-day "pause" in its onslaught—which will reportedly be extended for another two days—to make preparations for an even more ruthless onslaught on southern Gaza. "I've lost nearly 45 members of my family there. Most of their houses are destroyed, and whoever is left are homeless. So it's very close to my heart." The Ashtar theater in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank has called for performances around the world on November 29 of The Gaza Monologues. The focus on the supply chain as a national security issue is an ominous warning that, on top of the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine and the Israeli genocide in Gaza, Washington is moving rapidly towards opening a third front, this time against China. The Burlington Police Department announced that Jason J. Eaton, 48, was arrested Sunday afternoon near the scene of the shooting. Last week, the Student Parliament (StuPa) of Humboldt University (HU) rejected by a large majority a motion aimed at defending Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip and suppressing criticism of it. The protest was a repudiation of the political and media establishment's campaign to smear, intimidate and witch-hunt those opposing the genocide in Gaza. After the censorship campaign against Roger Waters in the US and Europe, the acclaimed singer has been targeted on the Latin American leg of his "This is Not a Drill" tour amid Israel's genocide in Gaza. Cases of influenza-like illnesses have seen thousands of children hospitalized recently. China's health authorities have told the World Health Organization that these illnesses are being caused by the continuing rise in mycoplasma pneumonias combined with other known seasonal viral pathogens. In Sydney, Australia's most populous city, households need to earn a staggering $261,733 annually for a mortgage on an average-priced home. The mass arrests in Newcastle, presided over by the state Labor government, were part of a broader assault on protests, including actions opposing the Israeli genocide in Gaza. US involvement in the project is in line with its geo-strategic moves to undermine Beijing's growing influence in the Indian Ocean region and its preparations for war against China. Educators must not be intimidated by this threat. If they organize a real struggle, unencumbered by the treacherous union bureaucracy, they can win their demands. The GDL rail union is looking for a deal it can sell as a success and that does not jeopardise the "profitability of the railways." Teachers in Uruguay conducted a 24-hour protest strike against cuts while 1,000 Winnipeg, Manitoba transit workers again voted down a sellout deal pushed by their union. 1,000 workers walked out according to the GMB union. Approximately 800 workers were on picket lines or took part in protests outside Amazon's warehouse.
