Over the past four days, the media has subjected the population to a barrage of war propaganda centered on the absurd claim that China sent a huge balloon visible to the naked eye to secretly spy on US nuclear bases. The French president and Israeli prime minister, both facing mass protests at home, met on Thursday to plan an escalation of NATO's war in Ukraine and Israel's conflict with Iran. The strong response to the rally shows that the SGP is giving a voice and a socialist perspective to widespread opposition to war and austerity. The SGP is the only party to oppose the ruling class' war in Ukraine and the danger of a third world war fought with nuclear weapons. Participants at the rally of the Sozialistische Gleichheitspartei on February 4 spoke out against the US-NATO war against Russia and its connection to the social crisis and the attack on the working class. The GMB union and the RCN called off Monday's strikes in Wales after being offered an extra 3 percent in pay, taking it overall to just 7 percent, and then offered to do the same in England. On Friday, after three days of stoppages by nearly 2,000 drivers, Unite Regional Officer Guy Langston announced the "suspension" of strikes on Monday and Tuesday of this week. The better than expected jobs report sparked a fall on Wall Street because it means the Federal Reserve will continue its program of rate increases. Young people are being slotted into military training by their high schools without their consent and against their will. The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps enrolls about a half million students and has annual funding of over $400 million. By lifting the requirement to wear a mask on busses and trains and abandoning workplace health regulations, the government is opening the door to the spread of new, even more dangerous variants of the coronavirus. Bed-block and increased ambulance ramping have been reported in every state and territory in recent months. Over 500 teachers and other workers have conducted a week-long strike in the face of an offensive by the Democratic Party-dominated state, the Woburn School Committee, Mayor Scott Galvin and the courts. The escalation of political violence in American life is not simply a vestige of an earlier period, but a symptom of the crisis and breakdown of bourgeois democracy amid escalating class tensions and expanding war efforts. The new list, established in response to demands from President Biden, puts South Carolina first and elevates Michigan and Georgia. The witch hunt against estate workers is a part of the escalating attack on the democratic and social rights of the working class as a whole. Despite the determination of workers to fight, the union leadership called off the strike and rushed a vote on a tentative agreement that concedes to nearly every demand of the city. Regardless of the immediate mechanical failure, the true cause of this catastrophe is the insatiable greed of Norfolk Southern and other Class I rail carriers, who have pushed for longer trains with smaller crews. Imperialism's spiral toward a catastrophic nuclear war must be stopped. But to build an anti-war movement, youth and students must understand the root of war. The fathers of two of the 29 workers killed in the 2010 Pike River mine disaster are campaigning for the release of documents and correspondence relating to a 2013 decision to drop charges against Pike River CEO Peter Whittall. The deal deepens the treacherous role of the Arab bourgeoisie, which has now formally buried its own "two state" solution and confirms that the nationalist agenda championed by all sections of the Palestinian bourgeoisie provides no way forward for the workers and oppressed masses Winter temperatures in colder regions of the country mean that many homeless individuals and families who have been sleeping in cars, hospital emergency rooms, campgrounds, state forests and other places not fit for human habitation increasingly seek emergency shelter. The American writer Russell Banks, who wrote about the lives of working-class people and historical figures such as John Brown, died on January 3 at the age of 82. The stand being taken by the Kinetic workers—their third strike in six weeks—is of national and international significance, and should be actively supported by workers everywhere.
