Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. A major factor in the devastation now unfolding and which will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the coming weeks and months is the bloody intervention of US imperialism in the region over the last three decades. Workers who spoke to the WSWS denounced the role of the unions in demobilizing the struggle against Macron and the billions of euros of French arms deliveries to Ukraine. In the face of low wages, increasing workloads, the enrichment of the Deutsche Post board and shareholders, billions being spent on war and rearmament, postal workers in Germany are showing a willingness to fight. The following speech was delivered by the lead candidate and chairman of the Socialist Equality Party (SGP), Christoph Vandreier, at the party's rally against the war in Ukraine on February 4 at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. On February 4, the Socialist Equality Party held a rally against the war in Ukraine and the return of German militarism as part of its election campaign for the Berlin election at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. We publish here the opening remarks of Johannes Stern, who moderated the rally. The total official death toll in the two countries exceeds 7,000, with thousands of people still under rubble and millions more in dire conditions. More than 1,800 houses have been severely damaged following devastating floods in Auckland and surrounding areas. On picket lines across England workers told the WSWS about their demands for higher pay and more staff to be employed in the NHS. Many workers expressed the view that pay, conditions, and the right to public health care had to be defended in a unified struggle against Rishi Sunak's Conservative government. WSWS reporters spoke to NHS workers on picket lines during this week's strike. The demobilisation by the University and College Union of the fight by college staff and its disaggregated nature is brought into sharper relief as educators in all four parts of the system—primary, secondary, further, and higher education—have been on strike in the city. Keller, who appealed to workers anger over the betrayals of the corrupt UAW apparatus, has now thrown his support to a long-time bureaucrat who directly participated in the sellout of autoworkers. In far too many ways, this was another exhibition of cultural backwardness, wealth and social complacency inflicted on the US and global public. Howard University's bid to become one of the Pentagon's higher education affiliates means it will be dedicated to the development of the US military's killing machines. The actions by the New York University administration against Naye Idriss constitute a fundamental assault on democratic rights and set a dangerous precedent for the victimization and targeting of left-wing students and university employees. Two neo-Nazis, including the founder of the Atomwaffen fascist terrorist group, Brandon Russell, are accused of conspiring to attack several energy facilities in Maryland in the hopes of causing a "cascading failure." A poll of 400 registered nurses living and working in Michigan has exposed the desperate working conditions in the health care system throughout the state that is leading to a dramatic rise in negative patient outcomes including an increase in the number of deaths due to understaffing. Doctors, nurses and other health staff are taking action in regions across Spain against low wages, deteriorating working conditions and attacks on public health care. Canada deploys surveillance plane over Haiti to lay groundwork for US-demanded military intervention Haiti, the Western hemisphere's most impoverished country, has been subject to a long series of catastrophic foreign occupations and interventions stretching back over a century, primarily led by American imperialism but also involving its Canadian ally. Educators at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia and Memorial University in Newfoundland are both in their second week of strike action to demand pay raises to meet inflation. "Our workplaces lack basic public health measures, including mask mandates and adequate ventilation, under conditions of the ongoing global pandemic." The inquest outlined in horrifying detail the chain of neglectful and cruel events that led to the death in custody of 37-year-old Aboriginal woman Veronica Nelson. The no-confidence motion against Daniel Suidani is a blow to the US government, which has funnelled so-called aid money into the island of Malaita and extended political support to him to reward his vociferous anti-China stance. A 14-year drought caused by climate change, criminally reckless forestry industry activity, unusually high temperatures and strong Patagonian winds have created the perfect conditions for the disaster unfolding in Chile. The fact that the devastating consequences of yesterday's earthquakes were entirely foreseeable and preventable underlines that what happened was social murder.
