Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The focus of Norfolk Southern executives and government regulators was to reopen the rail line and get trains running again as quickly as possible, regardless of the consequences for the people living in the area. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday that NATO is in a "race of logistics" against Russia as the war in Ukraine becomes a "grinding war of attrition." War is an event that arises from the complex interaction of social, economic and geopolitical processes and interests, operating on a global scale. The real cause of a war is rarely answered by determining who fired "the first shot." As the death toll in the Turkey-Syria earthquake passes 41,000, the Erdoğan government has announced a few token measures to calm public anger. The special European Council summit agreed to massively tighten up its common asylum and immigration policies, including collaborating closely with authoritarian regimes. The report of higher than expected inflation in January caused a drop on Wall Street, as investors anticipated that the US Federal Reserve will press on with its program of interest rate increases aimed at triggering a recession to undermine workers' wage demands. The layoffs are targeting mainly "hybrid" drivers, a lower-paid tier created by the 2018 contract which the Teamsters enforced over a majority "no" vote by UPS workers. Some 32,000 workers at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, voted by a 96 percent margin last week to reject an insulting offer of an immediate $1 raise in poverty-level wages. The sponsors and organizers of the Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona were at pains to keep anything about the multiple crises of world capitalism from finding its way into the festivities. Despite the NEU being handed the largest strike mandate since at least 2016, only seven strike days were announced, to give space for these rotten deals to be struck. At every stage in the dispute the UCU leadership has worked to minimise and suspend any strike action after claiming its campaign has secured concessions when they are the only side involved in a climbdown. The ruling class response to the MSU bloodletting—entirely predictable, hollow and pro-forma—was yet another exercise in evasion and posturing. None of the real issues can be broached because they point irrevocably to the crisis and bankruptcy of the political and economic system. University of Washington students are facing an unprecedented cost of living crisis as inflation soars and resources are diverted to the war drive. Anger of the deliberate suppression of workers' right to vote in the UAW election is particularly acute given the fact that 150,000 autoworkers in the US face a decisive fight in mid-September. The press conference was an attempt at damage control for the Democratic Party and the trade union apparatus, two months after a bipartisan vote in Congress to impose a contract which railroaders had rejected. Hundreds of thousands of people are without power, more than 10,500 are homeless, and large parts of the North Island are flooded. Although the details of what led to the violence at the Morowali plant remain unclear, the protest was fuelled by growing anger at the appalling working conditions at nickel smelters in Sulawesi. Corruption accusations are regularly used to settle political scores in South Korea, pointing to broader issues at work behind the scenes as the country's social crisis grows. The current exhibition focuses on the artist's many depictions of the city where he spent the bulk of his working life from 1906 till his death 60 years later. Bus drivers at Abellio London are continuing to speak out against Unite the union's cancellation of their three-month strike. Unite's anti-democratic action, ramming through a below-inflation pay deal via a non-binding consultative ballot, has produced widespread anger.
