At every stage in the dispute the UCU leadership has worked to minimise and suspend any strike action after claiming its campaign has secured concessions when they are the only side involved in a climbdown. The ruling class response to the MSU bloodletting—entirely predictable, hollow and pro-forma—was yet another exercise in evasion and posturing. None of the real issues can be broached because they point irrevocably to the crisis and bankruptcy of the political and economic system. University of Washington students are facing an unprecedented cost of living crisis as inflation soars and resources are diverted to the war drive. Anger of the deliberate suppression of workers' right to vote in the UAW election is particularly acute given the fact that 150,000 autoworkers in the US face a decisive fight in mid-September.
