Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The real victims of "national-security" secrets are the American people, who are denied knowledge of the crimes committed by the American government. As late as January 12, health authorities had confirmed that a mere 37 people had died from the virus, a figure known to be completely erroneous. The Senate in Berlin and the federal government have decided to end the compulsory wearing of masks on local and long-distance public transport. In a letter to Congress Janet Yellen said Treasury would have to undertake "extraordinary measures" to prevent the US defaulting on its debt obligations. Prosecutors blamed the Proud Boys for delaying certification of the presidential election on January 6, 2021, while lawyers for the accused blamed then-President Donald Trump and the intelligence agencies. Against the pro-war SPD, Liebknecht declared that, "The main enemy of the German people is in Germany: German imperialism, the German parties of war and German secret diplomacy." To counteract the growing opposition to war and militarism, the German government is resting on the war hysteria of representatives of well-off middle-class layers. The RMT and train operating companies issued a joint tight-lipped two-line statement reading, "We have had detailed discussions and we are working jointly towards a revised offer." The result does not reflect "apathy" on the part of educators. It is entirely due to the lack of any confidence by workers in the NASUWT leadership to wage a struggle to overturn the decades-long dismantling of state education—in which the unions have been fully complicit. Saturday's demonstrations were far larger than last week's protest, testifying to the increasing concerns and anger on the part of Israelis, Jewish and Palestinian, over the political programme of Netanyahu's far-right coalition government. After years of nearly flat wage increases and erosion of their earnings by inflation, the faculty is determined to fight for higher pay and for mental health supports for students who have suffered greatly due to the pandemic. A "no" vote is a critical first step, but to take their struggle forward, Pampas workers will need to take up a fight against the United Workers' Union bureaucracy, which is working to impose a sell-out. Sri Lankan plantation workers urge Pampas workers to take matters into their own hands and form their own rank-and-file committee, independent of the trade union apparatus. Maryland state government gives wrist-slap fine to CSX railroad for massive Baltimore coal explosion The Curtis Bay neighborhood has an ongoing lawsuit against CSX after a coal pit explosion in December 2021 shattered glass and nearly destroyed homes. This column profiles important historical events which took place during this week, 25 years ago, 50 years ago, 75 years ago and 100 years ago. Corporate media tells residents to "learn to live with flooding." Cameron has been fortunate to have emerged—and could only have merged—in a culture that demanded so little: efficiency, productivity, bursts of mechanical spectacle, a minimum level of dramatic believability. Nurses around the city denounced the shutdown of the powerful strike by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) and the agreement, which does nothing to seriously address understaffing. Workers at the WestRock Mahrt Mill in Cottonton, Alabama, have again defied the attempt by management and the USW to impose a concessions agreement. The Labor government is trying to bully PNG into accepting a security agreement that would place the impoverished Pacific nation on the frontline of military operations directed against China. The deeply unpopular Wickremesinghe government is desperately attempting to postpone local government elections scheduled to be held in March. The case against the only member of the British armed forces ever to face charges for the Bloody Sunday massacre of 14 unarmed demonstrators protesting internment without trial in Derry, Northern Ireland, is due to resume this month in Belfast.
