The central issue in the strike is chronic understaffing and the catastrophic state of the health care system in the US, as the fourth year of the global pandemic begins. The ditching of the final restrictions from the Zero-COVID policy takes place two weeks before the Lunar New Year holiday, historically the largest annual human migration, which will deepen the spread of COVID-19 across China. The United States and Germany have announced they will expand their training of Ukrainian troops inside their own borders, further embroiling them in a war with Russia. The announcement that Germany will supply Ukraine with Marder fighting vehicles is part of a spiral of escalation raising the danger of a third nuclear war. Politicians and the media are conducting an aggressive campaign for this to be followed by the delivery of battle tanks and other heavy weaponry. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said, "We will continue to speak with the Ukrainians about what they need for the next phase of their self-defence and we will continue working with our international partners about ensuring that we provide that. Tanks might well be part of that." The announcement came after a bilateral meeting between Canadian Prime Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden, where the two allies discussed waging war on Russia, thwarting China, securing access to critical raw materials and "friendshoring" supply chains. More than 7,000 nurses are standing strong on the picket line even as the New York State Nurses Association seeks to isolate and shut down the strike. The strike was the first this year and expressed the growing anger of workers over the deepening assault on their basic social and democratic rights by the government as it imposes the IMF's austerity agenda. The measures outlined by Shapps are part of the turn in the ruling class internationally to authoritarian forms of rule, which has seen the outright banning of critical strikes. Of the 100,000 civil service workers who can strike, no more than 5,000 PCS members have taken part in the "rolling action" until now. The basic thrust of the rules changes is to slash federal spending on social programs, block tax increases on the wealthy, and make it easier to block federal government funding and any increase in the debt limit. While the stated topics of discussion at the gathering included economic partnership and cooperation, stopping drug and human trafficking, promotion of clean energy and addressing the humanitarian crisis at the US-Mexico border, the agenda subordinated all of these issues to the strategic interests of US imperialism, with Canada playing a supporting role. An Auckland-based teacher told the WSWS how his increasingly severe Long COVID symptoms were misdiagnosed by doctors who said he had mental health issues. He said the government was allowing COVID to spread and ignoring the consequences for people's health. Amidst death and destruction at the front, the Zelensky government is engaged in far-reaching attacks on democratic rights. Working in close concert with management, the union effectively ambushed the workers, forcing them to immediately vote on a contract they had not seen. In response to management's presentation of its "best and final" offer, musicians say they will continue to fight for their demand for restoration of pay cut due to the pandemic and the defense of full-time orchestra positions. While specific details of the incident at Richneck Elementary School have not been released by authorities, the police allege that the shooting was intentional. The family of a 67-year-old driver for Walt Disney Company in Massachusetts has filed a wrongful death suit with management over his death from COVID-19. Elect rank-and-file committees and organize for a re-vote of both the ratification vote and the national officers election! There must be rank-and-file oversight of both elections!
