Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The organizers of the fascist assault in Brasilia are deeply entrenched in the state and especially in the military. The walkout of 7,000 nurses marks the first major strike of the new year in the United States and signals a new stage in the growing rebellion of health care workers. To wage a successful struggle, the New York City nurses must overcome the isolation and division that the New York State Nurses Association has imposed upon them. The Sozialistische Gleichheitspartei rally in the Spandau district gave a strong political lead in opposition to the German government sending tanks to Ukraine. The number of COVID-19 cases are close to record-highs as nearly all measures to stop the spread of the virus have been removed in Japan. The US is setting a trap for China by pushing it to take military action against Taiwan in the same way that it provoked Russia into invading Ukraine, having made advanced preparations for such a war. To have even attended these talks shows the treacherous intentions of the union bureaucracy. In the same statement as it extended its invitation, the government announced plans for the swift implementation of widely expanded anti-strike laws. The proposed legislation paves the way for the government, made up of fascistic, ultra-nationalist and religious forces, to assume dictatorial powers. Wickremesinghe's message underscores his determination to impose the burden of the deepening economic crisis gripping Sri Lanka onto the working class and the poor. The proposed agreement contains changes that workers were told nothing about, while the gains promoted by the union as a "historic win" are exposed as a fraud. Emboldened by the UAW's sellout, the University of California has made a substantial investment in a company that profits from the maintenance of high rent. The Socialist Equality Group calls on rail workers in Wellington to reject the sellout agreement presented by the Rail and Maritime Transport Union, which constitutes a real wage cut, and to form a rank-and-file committee independent of the pro-capitalist union. The significance of the crypto debacle, marked by ongoing bankruptcies, lies in the fact that it is the most egregious expression of processes in the broader financial system. The Independent Union of Workers of Audi Mexico (SITAUDI) unilaterally extended a January 1 strike deadline by 10 days, despite two decisive contract rejection votes by workers, while 440 workers at Howard Brown Health clinics in Chicago returned after a three-day walkout. The eight-hour working day and forty-hour workweek are increasingly becoming a relic of the past in Canada and internationally. These fundamental advances, which workers fought and died for over the course of a century and a half, are now effectively a dead letter. A Palestinian construction worker lives in a West Bank home 200 meters away from his wife and three children on the other side of the Israeli border wall. Sunday's events mark a new stage in the explosive political crisis in Brazil and throughout Latin America.
