There is no innocent explanation to the latest CDC cover-up, which was clearly deliberate and intended to prevent any public alarm that might disrupt the holiday shopping and travel season. Around 40,000 members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport workers union at the rail infrastructure firm Network Rail and at 14 train operating companies are involved in two 48-hour stoppages on January 3-4 and 6-7. On January 5, thousands of members of the train drivers union ASLEF will strike across 15 train companies. All that the union bureaucracy wants from the government is some minimal face-saving concession that will give them an excuse to demobilise their members and impose yet deeper austerity without provoking a further eruption of class struggle. For the first time in 100 years, the incoming House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker on the first ballot, due to bitter divisions within the majority Republican conference. Both President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz advocated continuing the Ukraine war until Russia's complete defeat, even if this entailed enormous social and economic costs and the risk of nuclear war. Three home fires alone, one in Buffalo, New York, another in Newcomerstown, Ohio and a third in Crossville, Tennessee accounted for 17 deaths. A suspected gas explosion shortly after midnight on New Year's Day left five people needing emergency medical help and at least one person required to be dug out from underneath rubble. Quebec's hard-right CAQ government is determined to impoverish public sector employees, cut social spending and privatize public services. The secrecy in which the UAW bureaucracy is shrouding the contract leaves little doubt that the proposal would entail painful new concessions. Police in the United States killed at an unprecedented rate in 2022, taking the lives of at least 1,176 people, for an average of 3.2 deaths every day. On Tuesday, Missouri executed Amber McLaughlin, the first openly transgender woman to be put to death in the US. Governor Mike Parson denied her clemency and the US Supreme Court had earlier refused to hear her case. The measure is saturated in hypocrisy, given that the Labor government and the entire political establishment are fully committed to the profit-driven program of a forever pandemic. Pampas is a tiny component of Wilmar International, a vast multinational corporation with more than 500 manufacturing plants and a workforce of around 100,000 people.
