Your contribution supports the daily struggle to provide political clarity and direction—exposing the forces driving war and dictatorship, intervening directly in developing struggles, and arming workers and youth with the socialist and internationalist strategy necessary to stop the assault now underway.
As these protests were being held, the Trump administration was simultaneously escalating plans for a massive expansion of the war against Iran. Trump renewed threats to “obliterate” Iranian infrastructure, while tens of thousands of US troops and additional naval and air assets have been surged into the region amid preparations for a possible ground invasion, which would plunge the Middle East into even wider conflagration and bring the world closer to catastrophe.
The ruling class understands the significance of what erupted in the streets—and it is terrified. The corporate media and the Democratic Party worked immediately to downplay the protests and channel mass anger back into safe channels.
The Democratic politicians and union officials who appeared on platforms across the country were not there to build an independent movement against war and dictatorship. Their function is to contain opposition, suppress the development of working-class struggle, and direct everything into the dead end of “vote in November,” even as the Trump administration escalates the war and tightens the apparatus of repression.
The working class is the decisive social force in society. It produces the wealth, operates the factories, logistics networks, ports, schools and hospitals—and it has the power to stop the war machine and defeat dictatorship. But this power must be organized consciously, independently of the Democratic Party and the trade union apparatus, through the development of rank-and-file organization from below and an internationalist political perspective.
That is the work of the World Socialist Web Site: to tell the truth, expose the complicity of the political establishment, and provide the socialist and internationalist strategy required to transform mass anger into a movement capable of stopping war and defeating dictatorship.
Donate now to support the World Socialist Web Site. Your contribution strengthens our coverage of these mass protests, expands our on-the-ground reporting, and supports the distribution of WSWS statements and socialist literature at demonstrations and workplaces across the country and internationally.
Above all, it helps build the political leadership in the working class—through systematic exposure of the Democratic Party and union apparatus, the development of rank-and-file organization from below, and the fight to unite workers across borders against war, dictatorship and the capitalist oligarchy.
