The presence of ICE at airports is a further step in normalizing the use of armed federal agents and the military in civilian settings to intimidate and terrorize the population. The Wall Street Journal and Axios reported Thursday that the Trump administration is considering deploying an additional 10,000 ground troops to the Middle East as the US war of aggression against Iran enters its fifth week. "If President Trump gives the go-ahead, the U.S. could soon have more than 17,000 ground troops on Iran's doorstep," the Journal reported. The government's decision to reduce subsidies and hike fuel prices is driven by its determination to implement the IMF's austerity program requiring huge cuts to public spending. "The conditions in schools are terrible. We did so much heavy lifting along with all the health services during COVID, and this is how we got repaid. It's just appalling." Plant occupations and strike threats across Mexico are pitting workers against not only transnational corporations, but also the union bureaucracy and the Sheinbaum government. Whatever their tactical disagreements, all of the candidates for the NDP leadership are staunch defenders of Canadian capitalism and its state, inveterate opponents of class struggle and determined to contain and neuter social opposition by shackling it to the pro-employer trade unions and parliamentary-electoral politics. Indian transport workers protest over wages and against privatisation; Australian mining workers denied pay over partial strikes; New Zealand firefighters' strikes continue.
