Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The US House is poised to pass a massive budget and tax bill that will eviscerate social programs used by millions, such as Medicaid and SNAP food benefits, while providing trillions in tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and billions for the immigration Gestapo and military. After nineteen months of their colluding with Benjamin Netanyahu's government as tens of thousands were killed and Gaza was destroyed, the three leaders have issued a declaration, both cynical and toothless, that they strongly oppose the expansion of Israel's military operations in Gaza. Chris Hedges transfers blame for the crimes of the Israeli-Zionist state and capitalist imperialism to the entire human race. Gaza, he proclaims, proves the futility of any belief in human progress. In Kiev, police harassed any visitors who dared to commemorate the victims of the Nazi attack in any way other than laying flowers. At the Memorial of Eternal Glory, police tried to detain two different women for playing the popular Soviet song "Victory Day" on their phones. In a television interview on Sunday, Scott Bessent said that countries which did not engage with the US in "good faith" would receive a letter reimposing the large tariff hikes announced on April 2. Although the extent of the war crimes in Gaza can no longer be concealed, the German government celebrates its unwavering friendship with Israel. The centrepiece of the agreement is a Security and Defence Partnership, framed in terms of combatting Russia. It opens the door to UK arms companies being given full license to fulfil contracts funded through the EU's €150 billion rearmament programme SAFE. "We should not be lining up behind our own ruling classes on the basis of reactionary nationalism. Unfettered by the treacherous union bureaucracies, we could unleash our collective social power to fight for credible demands to defend our jobs, and improve our wages and working conditions. This is why we are here today." Musk, whose factories are notorious for poor safety, is spearheading the corporate oligarchy's plans to remove whatever remains of workplace protections. The Fourth International Theoretical Conference in Nairobi is a rallying point for Stalinist parties defending capitalism and opposing Trotskyism. It reflects broader efforts to suppress revolutionary movements across Africa and Asia. The breakup of the Liberal-National Coalition, which has been in place for 80 years, expresses a historic crisis of the whole two-party set-up of capitalist rule. The Reserve Bank board statement referred to "the heightened level of uncertainty" in the world economy and said it had "considered a severe downside scenario." Healthcare workers across the country are preparing strike action, including a statewide nursing strike next week in Connecticut. Alongside the deliberate dismantling of public health in the US under Trump, the breakdown of the aviation infrastructure continues apace. Ritchie, 45, was the second person put to death in Indiana since 2009, following a 15-year hiatus due to the state's inability to obtain the drugs to carry out lethal injections. Kriv Stender's dramatic feature is limited by its perfunctory examination of the explosive political developments in Egypt that preceded Greste's incarceration. Washington claims the deal endangers "the safety and security of the region," threatening retaliation. The pro-EU candidate and mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, has won the presidential elections in Romania, ostensibly ending a political crisis that began with the annulment of the elections in December 2024. We must demand the suspension of the pilots, to defend colleagues at the targeted sites, and stop a rubber-stamp deal with Kretinsky across 1,200 offices. We must inform and unite workers against the CWU apparatus that silences our voice and enforces corporate diktats.
