Over the past week, a series of developments have reaffirmed the imminent danger of an H5N1 "bird flu" pandemic, for which American and world capitalism are wholly unprepared. The cuts are an unprecedented assault not just on federal workers but the millions who depend on the vital services they perform, such as healthcare, environmental protection, and social support. Sudden and unexpected shifts in financial markets, triggered by Trump's tariff war against the world, have the potential to set off a crisis. Newsom's recent pilgrimage to the White House was nothing short of a political debasement and a craven display of servility before President Trump. The most significant aspect of the dispute was the refusal of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union leadership, long promoted as "militants" and "socialists", to take any action to challenge the Gaza genocide. On February 6, thousands of people took to the streets of Hatay in commemorative events and silent marches to express their anger at the state authorities, the failure to hold those responsible accountable and the continued policy of impunity. The new legislation, in which Albanese agreed to include draconian mandatory jail terms, is a serious threat to anti-genocide opposition and basic democratic rights. Thousands of people have been affected by the extreme floods, as the Labor Government continues to fund and approve fossil fuel projects that will exacerbate climate change disasters. The latest round of limited work bans called by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union and other rail unions are designed to have minimal disruption, in line with their pledge to the Labor government last month. no production location, no job and no wage will be safe after the destruction of 35,000 jobs and the reduction of real wages by up to 20 percent.
