The Democratic Party has been largely silent on Trump's efforts to establish a dictatorship, and where they do speak, it is only to divert and suppress opposition. The Democrats would rather see Trump consolidate dictatorial rule than allow the emergence of a mass movement of workers and youth.
In just two weeks, Trump's administration has launched an unprecedented assault on democratic and social rights, issuing sweeping executive orders to carry out mass deportations and create the framework for presidential dictatorship.
The administration has handed the world's richest man, Elon Musk, control over slashing social programs, treating the government like his personal corporation.
Trump's efforts to consolidate authoritarian rule are part of a broader turn to dictatorship by capitalist governments worldwide. The genocide in Gaza, the US-NATO war against Russia in Ukraine, and the growing threat of war with China are all expressions of this crisis. The same ruling elites that trample democratic rights at home are carrying out imperialist crimes abroad, while the working class is forced to pay the price through austerity and repression.
Trump's return to power comes amid a global crisis of capitalism—escalating imperialist war, the turn to dictatorship, extreme social inequality, and an upsurge in the class struggle.
The World Socialist Web Site advances a policy of struggle. The critical task is to transform opposition into an organized movement of the working class against both parties of big business. The fight against dictatorship requires a fight against capitalism itself—which means building a movement independent of and opposed to the Democratic Party and all factions of the ruling class.
We need your support. The WSWS is not backed by oligarchs like Musk and Bezos. We rely entirely on donations from workers and readers like you. We do not answer to the ruling elite—we fight for the working class.
Donate today to help fund the fight against Trump's drive to dictatorship and the complicity of the Democrats and the media.
