Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. On Monday, Julian Assange walked out of the UK's Belmarsh Prison a free man, following five years of imprisonment and nearly 15 years of persecution by a cabal of imperialist governments led by the United States which hounded him for exposing their crimes. Protestors stormed the Parliament and set parts of it ablaze, while lawmakers fled using underground tunnels or hid in ambulances. Police used live ammunition, teargas and truncheons, resulting in the deaths of several protestors and hundreds of injuries. The deportations, in an operation clearly planned at the top levels of the French state, further exposes Macron's shift towards dictatorial rule. The court decision characterizes the Biden administration's pseudo-legal efforts to sidestep claims of voter suppression as "pedantic" and "inherently illogical and textually unsupported." Mélenchon could not make it clearer that he sees his task as promoting the completely discredited politicians of the Socialist Party. Teams on Camden Town High Street, in Kentish Town, and at workplaces including Royal Mail offices and hospitals, have distributed thousands of copies of the SEP's manifesto and sold literature. In comments to an investors meeting in Milan, Italy, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares pledged to shift the company's supplier base "from the Western world to the best-cost countries." In a country with a history of industrial disasters, the tragedy raises further questions about unsafe and exploitative conditions in the facilities feeding corporate global supply chains. A petition demanding the halt of Williams' impending execution has so far received over 90,000 signatures. Recent reports reveal that workers in construction and mining are committing suicide at rates that are more than double the average for all occupations. The indictment makes clear that this is far from being a radical but harmless group of nutcases, but rather is a networked organisation with a lot of money, a lot of weapons, the expertise to use them and detailed plans to commit massive, murderous terror. Workers must be warned. As the Canadian government backs the Israeli genocide in Gaza with millions in aid and diplomatic cover, fuels the escalation of the NATO-led war against Russia in Ukraine and sabre rattles against China in the Indo-Pacific, it is establishing the powers needed to crack down on opposition at home. Li's visit, one leg of a regional tour, was aimed at cultivating the Malaysian government's support as a counterweight to US diplomatic and military encirclement as part of preparations for war against China. The so-called "forever chemicals" pose a considerable health threat, causing thyroid cancer and liver damage. High exposure can lead to decreased fertility, developmental delays in children, as well as increased risk of prostate, kidney and testicular cancer. The next contract covering nearly 130,000 workers, is an opportunity for rural carriers to mobilize a rank-and-file rebellion to fight the destruction of the post office, which is being carried out with the support of both big-business parties and the postal union bureaucracy. As the June 30, 2024 contract deadline approaches for the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT), educators spoke with the WSWS about conditions in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) and the issues they feel must be addressed in a new contract. Tish Murtha wrote of the unemployed youth she photographed: "The sense of aimlessness and pent-up frustrations are reaching critical levels where they will be transformed into an explosive anger, directed against the establishment that has been so careless of their hopes and needs."
