Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The logistics giant's mass layoffs, which will go into effect in the first half of this year, are part of an accelerating and global wave of job-cutting in auto, technology and other industries. Seizing upon Sunday's killing of three US troops in an airstrike by Iraqi militia in Jordan, the United States is planning a major protracted military campaign throughout the Middle East. The campaign of slander against Waters is being ramped up by the corporate media as mass international opposition grows to the genocide in Gaza. One day before the City Council vote, high school students held anti-war rallies and sit-ins at City Hall to demand passage of the ceasefire resolution. The failed attempt by Zelensky to dismiss Zaluzhnyi is the starkest expression yet of an intense political crisis and power struggle in the Ukrainian ruling class and state apparatus. Wall Street fell after Fed chair Powell said a March cut was not its "base case." Following decades of betrayals by the UAW, the union is continuing to cut jobs, leading to an intensification of the social crisis in Warren, Michigan. As the objective situation develops, the UAW is central to the ruling class's strategy of austerity and greater preparations for war. The partisan impeachment drive, if successful, would mark the first impeachment of a Cabinet secretary in nearly 150 years. The Biden administration is demanding the Supreme Court grant State Department officials unchallenged power to separate mixed-immigration status families without having to offer an explanation to, or accept an appeal from, US citizens. Biden's actions continue the regime of imperialist piracy and sanctions launched under Obama and vastly intensified under Trump with the aim of subjugating Venezuelans through hunger, illness and mass suffering. A recent report shows that climate change has drastically increased the severity of the current drought in the globally-critical Amazon Basin. We are calling on all workers across each campus to prevent the union leadership from hastily shoving this deal through and then claiming a victory, as was done to our graduate students and teaching assistants back in October. The purpose of Sunday's meeting is to discuss the situation and lay the groundwork for a fight against the layoffs by the rank and file. At its online meeting on Tuesday, January 30, the Rail Action Committee condemned the abrupt termination of the train drivers' strike by the GDL union leadership and unanimously adopted a resolution calling on rail workers to take control of the strike in their own hands. The music event at the Jubilee Library in Brighton featured performers from Syria, Ukraine, Palestine, Russia and Sudan and was organised by Best Foot Music, which has amassed an impressive catalogue of recordings of musicians from all over the world. The rally brought together unions leaders who have sold out every struggle of the working class for decades, including most recently the mass strike wave of 2022-23, that prove the unions will do nothing to defend the working class from the onslaught of the Sunak government and the employers.
