Germany's main domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, revealed last week that it is pursuing its former boss, Hans-Georg Maassen, as a "right-wing extremist suspect." The agency has been forced to admit that it was led by a right-wing extremist for eight years. The world's third-largest automaker is cutting jobs in the US, Italy and France as the auto corporations seek to gain an edge in the highly competitive electric vehicle market. UK department store John Lewis plans to layoff 11,000 of its employees, approximately 14 percent of its 76,000-strong workforce, over the next five years. An Israeli offensive in Lebanon and Syria, backed by the US, would likely extend the barbarity being inflicted on Gaza and dramatically inflame the situation throughout the region and internationally. The meeting was called in response to last week's announcement of 12,000 job cuts by the logistics giant. A Canadian tech worker suffering with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer was sacked last month by Wayfair, their third mass layoffs since 2022. Biden has demanded Congress "immediately" pass the bill so he could "shut down the border." COVID transmission across the US remains at an alarming level. Deaths from COVID and rates of Long COVID continue to plague the population. The 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake killed tens of thousands of people and left millions homeless. Hundreds of millions of people have been abandoned to their fate in the face of new earthquakes and similar hazards. A wildfire engulfed entire neighborhoods this weekend in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar in central Chile, leaving at least 122 dead and 190 missing. Over the course of only a few days, the region has seen half a year's worth of rain batter the area. That millions of people have taken to the streets in Germany shows how hated the far right is and that they only see their anger articulated through ongoing demonstrations. Echoing the Biden White House, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared his government's full support for Washington's strikes on alleged Iranian-linked sites in Syria and Iraq. Institute for Government figures show that even with the £600 million in additional funding, the core money available to councils will still be 10 percent lower than in 2010-11.
