Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. Texas Supreme Court's abrupt intervention to block a medically necessary abortion is a concentrated expression of the profound rot of the whole social order in America, with fundamental human rights under siege and collapsing across the board. The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, with the United States, the leading global enabler of Israel's genocide, voting against the resolution. Vox is the heir of Francoism, a regime that identified working-class opposition with a "Judaic-Bolshevik conspiracy" and was allied to Hitler's Nazi Germany that exterminated 6 million Jews. We are publishing here the tribute to Helen Halyard given by Chris Marsden, the national secretary of the Socialist Equality Party (UK), to a memorial meeting for Helen held December 3. William Lehman, the Pennsylvania Mack Trucks worker and socialist candidate for UAW president in last year's election, issued the following statement defending the Socialist Equality Party in Sri Lanka. Zelensky's meeting with Biden was part of the White House's ongoing effort to secure another $60 billion for Ukraine, which is confronting a military debacle in the US-NATO war against Russia. At the recent Social Democratic Party conference Chancellor Scholz did not limit himself to embracing the imperialist violence in the Middle East. He also positioned the SPD as the most aggressive party of rearmament and executor of the NATO war offensive against Russia. After the Harvard Corporation declined to take action against embattled Harvard president Claudine Gay, House Speaker Mike Johnson denounced the board, calling their decision "outrageous." What is really behind the suppression of the anti-genocide resolution is the fact that it was headed for victory, something the billionaire donors and regents, Democratic and Republican politicians, and Pentagon, CIA and State Department officials who collectively run the university would not allow. The International Socialist Organisation cited mealy-mouthed statements by unions in New Zealand, the US and Australia calling for a ceasefire, while covering up the role of the unions in preventing strikes and other actions to stop the supply of weapons for Israel's war machine. There is a veritable clamour in financial markets for rates to be cut motivated by both greed and fear. The layoffs are part of a years-long attack on jobs by the railroads, which has escalated after the strike ban issued last year by Congress. Economists say Australian households and the economy have "hit the wall," with the Australian economy "almost" coming to a "standstill in the September quarter." All three candidates are defenders of capitalism and, despite their populist electoral rhetoric, innately hostile to the interests of working people. The Labour Party, which has done nothing to tip the despised Tory government out of office, is instead fashioning itself as an identically right-wing replacement.
